(2) Haleakala National Park(2)

I went to the cinder cone named Kaluu O Ka O'o( it means "deep hole made by sticking pole) about 4ml.hike to go and back. There was no plant on the way except Silversword. They can survive in this waste land and they are endemic and endangered.
We can see them at the visitor center of Mauna Kea. Center once held a event to distribute young Silverswords which were cultivated and plant around the center. I planted it carefully and put 100yen coin beside it for I could recognize it when I would come here next time.
But too bad it was dead. Only 10% of them alive. Of course I withdrew the coin.
The back of this picture was Kaolau Gap, once the lava flowed out here.
They are extremely beautiful cinder cones of their color and smooth surface
If  you crick this picture to enlarge it you can see the trail that goes through Kaupo Gap (another gap it is covered with cloud in this image) and goes down to sea. There is a cabin and we need two days to go to sea. On the way back I met a attractive lady backpacker. She was alone and said she could reach the cabin until dark. I asked her if  you stay alone, no!,with one man don't you feel scare? She said with a smile she dose not mind.
It is the crater of Kaluu O Ka O'o. It looks like deep nest of doodlebug. The foot of right side mountain is Kaupo Gap. From this gap the lave flowed to the sea.
Please watch the cinder cones again.
Opposite side is the cliff of eroded volcano, It looks like Caldera wall. Strata tell the history of this volcano. Can you see Godzilla and alligator in this cliff?
It is Hawaii Island seeing from the summit, Red Hill. Left side is Mauna Kea(13,796') and right is Mauna Loa (13,677') Pay attention Mauna Loa, it is a typical shield volcano, it heaped up from 18,000' depth of sea base. It's gentle slope indicate it has tremendous volume. Yes! it is the highest and most massive mountain in the world.

(1) Haleakala National Park(1)

I went to Haleakala National Park in Maui Is. It was 41minutes flight from Hilo to Kahului by such small plane.
On the way we can see the line of volcano vents on the mountainside of Haleakala. It looks like Lakagigal volcanoes in Iceland. ( I have seen it in photos only)
It is the magnificent view of West Maui mountains. ( an elevation of highest peak is 5,788')
An altitude of Haleakala (it means House of the Sun) is 10,023'. It is the view of Haleakala crater from Visitor Center, superb!!

It is called Haleakala Crater, at first I thought it must be Caldera because of its scale and surrounded by high cliff.
But according to explanation board this crater is not volcanic in origin but erosion and in this basin so many cinder cones were made by eruptions. So it is better to call it Haleakala Valley.

Lava Tree State Park

In the subtropical rain forest with big monkey pods there is open space with no big tree.
It is the track of lava flow of 1790 fissure eruption in east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano. It is the State Park.
The fast flowing Pahoehoe Lava met trees and made many strange forms here so this park is called Lava Tree Park. This is the tree wrapped by lava and burnt away.
Lava encountered wet cold trees and was cooled down and became solid. When the flow drained away there leaved lava towers like this.
Burned out tree made a little lava tube.

This park is well maintained so it is very good place to stroll.

The place of Refuge

There is the National Historic Park named Puuhonua o Honaunau about 3 miles south from Kealakekua Bay. It was the place of refuge, asylum, for who broke Taboo(Kapu) and sentenced the death penalty or the soldiers of a defeated army. In Big Island there are many signboard "Kapu" in front of the private land even now, means "off limits".
In Japan there were two famous temples of refuge, Toukei temple and Mantoku temple, for women who wanted to divorce or escape from the prostitute.
It is a shrine, Hawaiian name is Heiau.
It was guarded by Gods, Teiki.
Their faces are like this.

It is wonderful place surrounded by dark blue sea, white sand beach and coconuts grove. We saw turtles swimming.

Capten Cook Monument

Over Kealakekua Bay there is a white monument for the Captain Cook who was the discoverer of Hawaii island and was kill at this place by native Hawaiians. Around there it is very clear sea so good place for a snorkel, but we can approach there only by ship or trekking on the skyline. At first I planed to go trekking but waitress of Manago Hotel said this was very rough rout so I gave up this plane. There were many rental Kayak shops at this side but I had never rowed this, I also gave up the idea of going to the monument.
Later I heard rowing Kayak was not so difficult. I will try next time.

The hotel I recommend

After visited the secret beach I stayed Manago Hotel at Captain Cook town. The most expensive rooms were $65, from there I could see Kealakekua Bay beneath. It was not so bad for its price. But Japanese room,$75, this hotel proud of it was just a flophouse room, Tatami-mat were worn out.
The restaurant of this hotel surprised me. It was like a student's dining hall.
This pork chop was $8, with heaping bowlful of rice, boiled beans, macaroni salad and warm vegetables with Tofu. Pork chop and chicken saute that my wife ordered were very good we ate them all but other dishes could not eat half. I looked sideways at the another tables I found even very old and thin lady ate whole dishes.
The restaurant was full with the local people, not lodgers. The standing lady was a cheerful waitress who assisted us for order.

Secret beach

Guide book said there is a empty beach 30 miles south from Kailua Kona so I went there. There is a small village far below the Mamalahoa Hwy and it
has the park named Milolii beach park. This secret beach is the inner part of the park.

The guide book also said the residents were not friendly to outsider. That's ridiculous! The lovely smiles that I have never seen welcomed us.
The trail head to Honomalino, secret beach, was flooded below the sea. The bottom of the sea was lava rock so we felt little bit pain to walk with bare foot but we must not get shoes wet.
We walked such a path for 20 minutes to the beach that was just like our own beach.
It was crowded today.
The palm grove created tropical atmosphere.
The fallen palm was cut. Hawaii has no seasonal changes so it had no tree rings.

(8) tremendous earthquake and tidal wave(tsunami)(8)

The gymnasium was exposing a lot of pictures taken away by the tsunami and collected later. Goods can be replaced if we pay cost, but photos cannot be replaced. So many people picked up them from the muddy water and posted in the hall. People came here and looked for their pictures. Many pictures are showing happy time and smiles but now...In a sense it is very sad scene!
To get back to the former enjoyable life they held Festival (Matsuri) . Gaku-vo and other volunteer groups worked on the preparation. They made splendid BBQ dishes it was only ¥100 because all ingredients were donated.

Yakitori was ¥50 for one broach.

This stand was selling Japanese towel (tenugui) that can be put around the head.
He, the French, went around the site shouting big voice "How about tenugui, only 300yen" in Japanese.「tenugui wa ikagadesukaaa? Ichimai 300yen deeesu.」
He said they sold out all of them, but he lost his voice next morning. I guess people were very terrified " the odd foreigner (kind of Japanese idiom-sorry-)" was selling tenugui and they thought it was better to buy it for own safety.
The climax of the Festival was Bonn Dance of Sooran-Bushi(kind of fisherman song in Hokkaido) . Many volunteers joined this.

The days with hard work have passed but they did not feel tired. Strong connection have made among them day by day.

His research is about social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Blog, wilis, etc. and everything on Internet) and how we can use these social network to improve personal learning. Personal learning is about people trying to learn things alone using personal methods or documents found on Internet, not like in a class with teacher.

Kesennuma sank about 1m. Their efforts to reconstruct must be continued.
When he left the city he sent a Cheer to them."Good Luck! Gannbatsuoo!(Dialect of Kesennuma 「Gannbarou!」)"
And he sent a message to his parents and friends in France.
"De l'autre bout du monde je pense tout le temps a vous et je vou embrasse-From the other side of the world I think about you all the time and I send you lots of Love!"

I also want to send them a message that every Japanese who know him love him. He is the best diplomat of France.
And I also say "thank you" to the members of Gaku-vo, especially foreign students, Indian, Canadian, Koreans, Taiwanese, French, American and their parents and friends in their homeland for helping Tohoku.
