白馬に乗った子ども child sitting astride a white horse

 郊外をドライヴしていたら、白馬にまたがって歩いている子どもに出会いました。傍に誰かがついているわけではなく、また気負ったところも一切ありませんでした。いつもながらのことという感じ。
When I drove a suburb of Hilo town I met a little child sitting astride a big white  horse. No one was beside him and he did not get exciting, because it was usual way.

写真を撮らせてくれと頼んだら、いいよ！と立ち止まってくれました。歳を聞いたら小学三年生だそうです。
I asked him to take picture of him. He said OK and stopped for a little while. He was in the 3rd year of elementary school.

このおじさん何を驚いているのだろうと言わんばかりの態度で、後も振り返らず帰っていきました。ハワイ島って！！
He returned to his house without looking back, as if he said what was astonished this man. What a Big-Island!!

ナニマウ・ガーデン Nani Mau Gardens

ヒロの郊外に、完璧に手入れされた植物園、ナニマウ･ガーデンがあります。
There is a well kept garden, named Nani Mau Gardens, at the suburb of Hilo.

入園料は１０ドル、大阪弁でオバサンが案内するトラム･ツアーもあります。トラムとランチのパッケージは２２ドル。
Entrance fee is $10. It has a tram tour with the guide of elder lady who speaks with Osaka accent. $22 for tram tour and lunch.

ここの最大のお客は、日本人のツアーだそうで、現地のガイドブックによると、日本人は庭園に関しもっとも気難しい人々だそうです。
According to the guide book of this place, the most of their business comes from Japanese tour. They are fussy about gardens.

向こうに見える白い建物でのガーデン･ウェディングは地元の人々の大人気。
The white pavilion is the most favorite place for wedding among the local people.

いろいろな果物もなっています。これはノニ。このジュースは高血圧、糖尿病にいいそうですが、道に落ちて踏まれると、ものすごい悪臭を放ちます。
There are so many kinds of fruit in this garden. This is Noni, its Juice is good for Hypertension and Diabetes, but its smell is extraordinary bad when it is trampled on the road.

 キャノン・ボール・フルーツ（大砲の玉）。ファーマーズマーケットで試食しましたが、買おうとは思いませんでした。
Cannon ball fruit. I ate it at farmers market but I never intended to buy it.

ソーセージ･ツリー。これは食べたことありません。
Sausage tree. I have never eaten it.

見事なトーチ･ジンジャー。

Excellent Torch Ginger.

びっしりと花をつけた巨木。（名前を調査中です。分かる人がいたら、コメント欄で教えてください。）
半日はタップリと楽しめるところです。
The big tree with so many flowers. ( I am investigating its name now. Some one knows it please tell me at Comment Column)
Anyway we can enjoy here in half a day.

さとうきび列車 Sugar Cane Train

マウイ島のもっとも賑やかな観光地、カアナパリとラハイナを昔の蒸気機関車を復元した さとうきび列車が走っています。往復＄１5、約一時間の旅です。
Between Ka'anapali to Lahaina, the most crowded towns in Maui, there is a railway and steam locomotive that is restored the old sugar cane train is running. $15 and 1hour for round trip.

１９４３年型の蒸気機関車を改造した、石炭を焚く本格的なもので、約８ｋほどの距離を走ります。スターフルーツという星型をした果物を振舞ってくれます。「チップはマハロ・・・ありがとうと」いう表示もアットホームな感じです。
It is burning coal typical steam locomotive, remodeling 1943 model. It runs about 6miles. We can eat a Star Fruit, asterisk shape fruit, flee. There is a message "Tips Mahalo-thank you-"

ゴルフ場の中を走り、
Run through the golf course,

海岸沿いをラナイ島を見ながら走り、（もちろん車に追い越されます）
Run beach side seeing Lanai Island, the cars passed me by, of course.

ブーゲンビリアが生い茂った道を走り
Run by the road with many bougainvillea trees,

橋の上で蒸気を放出して 喜ばせてくれます。
It pleased us by spewing out lot of steam on the bridge.

そして終点では、ターンテーブルで方向転換して戻って行きます。なんともいえずノスタルジックで、幸せを感じさせる列車でした。
At the terminal station it turns on the turn-table and go back. It gives us kind of nostalgia and happiness.

おススメのホテル The hotel I recommend

秘密のビーチに寄った日は、キャプテンクックにあるマナゴ･ホテルに泊まりました。一番高い部屋が一部屋二人で＄65で、ケアラケクア湾を一望できる部屋でした。まずまずの部屋でした。このホテル自慢の和室（＄75）は、チラッと見た感じでは、木賃宿、畳が擦り切れていました。
After visited the secret beach I stayed Manago Hotel at Captain Cook town. The most expensive rooms were $65, from there I could see Kealakekua Bay beneath. It was not so bad for its price. But Japanese room,$75, this hotel proud of it was just a flophouse room, Tatami-mat were worn out.

驚いたのは、レストラン。ホテルのレストランというよりは、日本の場末の食堂という感じです。
The restaurant of this hotel surprised me. It was like a student's dining hall.

そして、＄8のポークチョップ。この食堂の自慢料理です。大きなどんぶりにご飯が山盛りと、煮豆、マカロニサラダ、そして豆腐が入った温野菜が山盛りに。大きなポークチョップはいい味でした。妻は、チキンソテーを注文。悪くなかったようです。 メインディシュはどうやら食べましたが、他のものは半分も食べられませんでした。横目で他のテーブルを見ていると、お年を召したご夫人を含めて皆完食していました。
This pork chop was $8, with heaping bowlful of rice, boiled beans, macaroni salad and warm vegetables with Tofu. Pork chop and chicken saute that my wife ordered were very good we ate them all but other dishes could not eat half. I looked sideways at the another tables I found even very old and thin lady ate whole dishes.

食堂は満員に、ほとんどが地元の人でした。立っているのは、我々の注文の相談に乗ってくれた親切で陽気なウェイトレス。
The restaurant was full with the local people, not lodgers.The standing lady was a cheerful waitress who assisted us for order.

ホイティントン公園 Whittington Park

昔、さとうきびの積み出しに使った桟橋のあとが公園になっています。
The ruins of s pier, used for shipment of sugar cane, is a park now. 

小さいけれども、静かで美しい公園です。昼食のお弁当を取るには最適の場所。
It is small but very quiet and beautiful park, and good place to take a picnic lunch.

桟橋のすぐ横に恐ろしい形相の怪物の顔が。長い舌を出しているのがご愛嬌といったところ。
But there is a monster with a terrible look near the pier. It is a kind of farce to stick out long tongue.

実は、ﾏｳﾅ･ﾛｱの溶岩流が流れ込んだ場所です。溶岩洞窟の典型で、この洞窟を通って溶岩が冷めずに流動性を保って、長距離を走ります。べろの部分は最後の溶岩が固まったものです。ひょうきんな男の子が、足場の悪いのをものともせず歩いていって、絶好の被写体を作ってくれました。
It is a typical lava tube from Mauna Loa. Hot lava run long distance trough this cave keeping hot temperature and fluidity.The tongue is the last lava become solid. A jocular boy went to the cave, he did not mind bad foothold,and made a good subject for photos.

ラマ教の寺院 Temple of Tibetan Buddhism

南回りのハイウェイでキラウェアを過ぎてしばらく行ったところに、パハラという小さな村があります。そこから、草原と森の中を8kほど行ったところに、突然カラフルな旗が現れて、小さな小さなラマ教(チベット仏教)の寺院があります。 周囲は何もありません。
On the high-way passing Kilauea about 30ml. distance toward the south there is a little village ,Pahala. From this, passing through the field and forest go 5miles suddenly colorful flags appear. There is a small, small temple of Tibetan Buddhism. Nothing around there.

孔雀が羽を広げて歓迎してくれました。(突然の闖入者を威嚇しているのかもしれませんが ）
A peacock welcomed us spreading his wings. (or he threatened sudden intruders)

本堂の中は、チベット仏教だけあってとてもカラフルです。１９９９年にはダライ･ラマ１４世も訪れています。
The main hall of a temple of Tibetan Buddhism is very colorful, compare with Japanese Buddhist temple. Dalai Lama ⅩⅣvisited here 1999.

庭には何羽かの孔雀が闊歩しています。
Several peacocks and peahens were walking trough the garden.

羽を広げた孔雀を裏から見たところです。あまり見る機会がありません。
The peacock's reverse side. I have never seen it before.

一人でこの寺を守っている僧です。
会った瞬間、驚愕してしまいました。１５年前になくなった私の父にそっくりなのです。この写真を見ていると、あのころと同じ調子で話しかけてきそうな･･・チベット仏教の教える転生輪廻がこの寺に漂っていたのでしょか?
He is a Lama who maintains this temple alone.
When I met him I was shocked because he looked like my father passed away 15years ago. Whenever I see this picture I feel as if he is speaking to me as that time.
Because the temple filled with the sense of Transmigration, Tibetan Buddhism preach us.

ヒロの夕焼け Sunset at Hilo

ハワイは夕陽がきれいなので有名ですが、ハワイ島では西側のコナの夕陽がレストランで夕食を食べながら楽しめるので人気です。晴天が多い場所なのであまり見られないことはありません。
The Hawaii islands are very famous about beautiful sunset. In the Big Island sunset of Kona, western side of the island, is very popular because we can enjoy it with dinner.

そして、マウナ･ケアの山頂から見る夕日。時間になるとたくさんのツアーのバスが集まります。
And sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea. Many sunset-seeing vans gather at twilight time.

ヒロ側は太陽が山に沈み雨が多いこともあってなかなか見られませんが、時にこのようなすごい夕陽を見ることができます。
Hilo has many rain and sun sinks over the mountain so we cannot see beautiful sunset every day. But occasionally we can see such sun's evening glow.

マウナ･ケアの山頂で、天文台がシルエットで見えています。
Back ground is the summit of Mauna Kea. Astronomical Observatories was silhouetted against the purple sky.

シルエットになっている木は、ノーフォーク松で、外来種ですが独特の雰囲気をかもし出しています。
These trees are pine of Norfolk. They are introduced species but they create some kind of unique air.

電線の間に見えているのはマウナ･ロアの稜線です。これほど私を魅せる山はありません。

Skyline of Mauna Loa is seen between electric wires. I am always fascinated by this mountain.

ジェームス・ケアロハ公園 James Kealoha Beach Park

私のコンドーの隣は、小さなしかしとても美しい公園です。この写真は屋根の上から撮ったものです。 冬の間は沖で鯨が潮を吹くのがみえます。(あまり好い写真ではありませんがかすかに見えると思います。）
Beside my apartment there is a little but very charming park named James Kealoha Beach Park. This is taken from the roof of the apartment. We can see whales are blowing offshore in winter season. ( It is not a good photo, but  you can see the blow slightly. )

This is taken from opposite side of the park. You can see the apartment.

公園の中には湧き水の池があります。右側の小屋にはバーベキューセットがおいてあり、 休日には人が集まって楽しんでいます。ただし、アルコールは一切ダメ。ふんだんに牛肉を焼いてこの雰囲気の中でビールを飲んだらさぞおいしいだろうと思うのは私だけでしょうか。
There is a pond of spring of fresh water. In the right side cabin there are BBQ sets and many people enjoy BBQ on holiday. But alcohol beverage are prohibited. I'm always thinking that it must be paradise if I can drink beer with plenty of beef in this splendid atmosphere.

小さな島があり、わずかながら砂浜があります。
There is a small island and it has small sand beach.

パパイヤがたわわに実っている木も。でも取る人はあまりいません。なにしろ五つ一ドルで買え
るのですから。
There are trees with many papayas,but no one take them because we can buy them $1 for 5 or 6.

ライフガードはこんなお兄さん。おっそろしいみてくれですが、話しかけてみると気さくな人で、自慢の刺青の写真を何枚も撮らせてくれました。広島から来た日本人移民の子孫で、日本語はほとんど話しません。
He is a life-guard. He looks like very terrible in Japanese sense. But when I spoke to him he was very friendly and allowed to take many pictures of his proud tattoo.
He is a Japanese Hawaiian of 4 or 5 Th generations came from Hiroshima but he did not speak Japanese at all.

ナニロア・カントリー・クラブ Naniloa C.C

リリオカラニ公園で少し紹介した、市の中心部にあるナニロア･カントリー･クラブです。9ホール、パー35、2800ヤード、ハーフ・ラウンドで＄10（62歳以上は＄9）、カート2人乗り＄10.

This is Naniloa Country Club, it is located in center of the Hilo, 9 holes, 2800yards par 35. Play fee for half round is $10(senior, over 62, is $9), a cart for two is $10.

コースの境に何もないので、広々とした感じ。打ち込むと危ない?　大丈夫、まず誰もいないから。空いているので、気が向いたときちょっとプレーをという感じ。これが一番うれしい。

It has an open view because there is nothing on the boundary of course. Do you feel dangerous if your shot is slice ball? No problem! may be there is no one around you.

It is very nice for me, Japanese, I can play anytime I want, need not reservation or waiting.

そして所々にマンゴーの木が。シーズンになると、マンゴーがたくさん落ちていて、そのおいしいこと。椰子の実もたくさん落ちているけどこれはすぐには食べられません。

Some Mango trees are there in the course and many Mangoes fallen on the lawn at the season, May. They are very delicious indeed. Many coconuts also fallen, but these cannot eat immediately.
