ココナッツ林。このように椰子の実が落下し、危険なので立ち入り禁止。

西海岸への道。牛以外ほとんど人や建物はありません。
The Road to West coast. There were few houses but cows.

国道の終点。カプカヘフ海岸につきました。小川が流れ込んでいて、モロカイ島の真っ赤な土が堆積しています。たくさんの動物の足跡が。
The end of the rout. Kapukahehu Beach. Molokai's red dirt were carried by stream and piled arround.
There were Many foot prints of animals on it.

静かで、美しい海岸。人っ子一人いません。日本人としてはもったいないとの一言。
Quiet and beautiful beach. There was not a soul on the beach. I,Japanese, felt " How wasteful to let such a fascinating left vacant."

次に行った、カポハク・ビーチ・パーク。長い砂浜が続いていますが、ひとっけはありません。
Next was Kapohaku Beach Park. Gold sand long beach was also empty.

そしてモロカイ島を後にしました。低空を飛ぶので飛行機からの眺めは最高！ほとんど家はありません。
Goodbye Molokai!! Plane flied very low so we could see a beatiful site, air port and red cray land. A few buildings.

モロカイ島（3）ハラワ渓谷 Molokai Island (3) Halawa Vally

モロカイ島はそれほどよく知られた島ではないので、地図を載せておきます。クリックするとよくわかると思います。

私のコンドーがある、ハワイ島ヒロからは直行便がなく、ホノルルからこの小型プロペラ機で３２分間で付きます。
Could no go directly from Hilo, Hawaii Isl. to Molokai. From Honolulu to Molokai took 32minutes by this small propeller plane.

着いた日にハラワ渓谷まで行きました。途中、かのダミアン神父が立てた教会があり、等身大の立像があります。
I went to Halawa Valley. On the way there was a church which was built by Father Damian. There is a life size statue of him in front of the church.

ビーチから見上げると、渓谷の奥にいくつもの滝が見えます。
We can see many water falls in the inner part of the valley from the beach.

我々のモロカイホテルは海岸に立っていて、南国の原住民の小屋を思わせるようなバンガローです。私の部屋は正面に見える高い椰子の木の下で、波打ち際まで数歩のところです。レストランから写しています。
We stayed at Hotel Molokai. It is beside the beach. Rooms in bungalows, something like the a cabin of southern country natives. My room was under the high palm trees, seen in the center, only a few steps away from the shore. This picture took from the restaurant.

ステーキを注文しました。＄28ぐらいだったと記憶しています。野菜にブロッコリーとジャガイモを選んだらこの量です。料理もおいしかったけど、海辺で満天の星を見ながら飲むビールは最高です。
I ordered beef steak, about $28. I chose broccoli and potato. Too big! The dish was good but beer was more to drink under the many stars in the heavens.

モロカイ島 (２) ライ病患者に尽くした二人の聖者 Molokai Island (2) Two Saints deovoted to Lepers

高低差５３０ｍ、距離5.1ｋ、２６のスイッチバックを経て、平坦地に着き、ここでミュールからバスに乗り換えます。バスの横でミュールたちは餌をもらい疲れを休めています。右側の丸で囲んだところでは、落馬した二人を収容しています。
This trail descends a 1780foot cliff and 3.2mile in length and has 26 switchbacks. Here we changed mule to bus tour. Mules took a rest and get food. White circle point they rescued two person who fell down from mules.

老朽化したため取り壊された病院。家並みが現在の静かで平和なカラウパパを象徴しています。
A site of old hospital. We can see the houses, peace and quite now a day Kalaupapa.

半島の反対側(東側）です。ここで完全に行き止まり。船で運ばれてきた患者はこのように隔離された場所にいたのです。
East end of the peninsula. The patients who carried by ships were living in such isolated place.

ダミアン神父を抜きにカラウパパを語ることはできません。
１８６６年、ライ病で弱ったハワイアンの「捨て場」として、カラウパパが選ばれました。船で運ばれわずか１０日分の食料とともに、クレーンで島に降ろされた患者は、せいぜい1～2週間で死亡していました。死ぬと仲間が穴の中に放り込んで、それでおしまい・・・
１８７３年、３３歳のベルギー人のダミアン神父は、２週間の予定で派遣されてきました。しかしあまりにも悲惨な状況に打たれた神父は、この地にとどまり、まずやったのが棺桶を作ること、そして住まいを作り、農業を教え、患者に勇気と尊厳を与えてきました。そして、自身がライ病になり13年余の闘病のすえ、1889年に亡くなりました。その功績で、２００９年に列聖され聖人としてたたえられています。
写真はダミアン神父が死ぬ間際まで建設を見守っていたセント・フィロメナ教会。東の果ての少し手前で、人里から1キロ以上離れていると思われますが、丸印のところに猫がいて、茶碗にキャッツフッドが入っていました。
We cannot talk about Kalaupapa without the stories of Father Damian.
1866,Kalaupapa was chosen as the "dumping site" for Hawaii's ailing lepers. They ware carried by ship and were landed by crane with just a ten day ration of provisions.Survival was measured in few weeks.When they died other patients threw them into the hole. That's all!!
Fatter Damian arrived here 1873 on two weeks mission. But he was so taken aback by the lepers' horrific plight, he stayed here for the rest of his life.
At first he made coffins and made shelters,taught agriculture, encouraged and gave them human dignity. He himself developed leprosy and after 13years struggle against disease he died 1889. He was canonized 2009.
This is the Church named St. Philomena's Church that Father Damian supervised its construction until he died. It was just before the East end and 1000yards far from the human dwelling but in white circle there is a cat with cat food in a bowl.

もう一人のカラウパパにちなんだ聖人がマザー・マリアンヌです。マザーは死に瀕しているダミアン神父の看病に当たるため、カラウパパにわたり、ダミアン神父の遺志を継いで、患者を看病し、女の子たちを守り教育し、80歳で死ぬまで献身しました。ライ病ではありませんでした。同じく列聖されています。
Mother Marianne, another Saint associated with Kalaupapa. Mother came to Kalaupapa to care for dying Father Damian. After his death she nursed patients, taught and guard girls etc. She died 80years old, not leprosy. And also canonized.

マザー・マリアンヌゆかりのセント・エリザベス教会の内部。バスツアーのガイドが聖歌を歌ってくれました。ここのガイドはみんなかつて患者だった人だといわれていますが？？マザー・マリアンヌの墓の前では、彼女の功績を語っているとき、感極まって話せなくなり、シスターが後を引き継いでいました。
Inside of the St. Elizabeth Church. Our guide sang Chant for us. It is said the all guides of Kalaupapa are former patient? He talked about Mother Marianne achievement in front of her grave but he could not speak because of  moving tear so Sister continued his story.

患者たちの墓です。穴に捨てられていたライ病者の人間の尊厳を守るため、デミアン神父は棺桶や墓にこだわったようです。
The graves of Leper patients. At first  they were just thrown into the holes when they died. But Father Damian was stickler for coffin and grave to keep the human dignity of lepers.

また、ミュールに乗って帰ります。最初は海沿いの気持ちのいいトレールなのですが。わがアリカはグループからかなり遅れています。
We came back by riding mules. Beginning is the comfortable trail along the beach side. My Alika was already behind the group.

登りは下りほど怖くはありません。
To go up is easier to go down.

そして、厩舎に戻ります。空のミュールはヘリで運ばれた人の乗っていたものです。
And back to a stable. The mule for a person who was carried  by helicopter was empty.

最後に参加した証明書をくれました。白の矢印が、ミュールが崖から落ちた場所です。アリカの名前も記されています。

They gave me a Certification of the tour. White arrow is the place that my mule fell down from the precipice.  There is a name Alika, my stupid and cute mule.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

モロカイ島（1）ライ病(ハンセン氏病)患者隔離半島に Molokai Island (1) Go to Leper (Hansen's desease) isolation Peninsula

モロカイ島には、ライ病患者を隔離した、カラウパパという半島があります。ここは海浜の断崖としては世界一高いとギネスブックで認定されている５００ｍの崖に囲まれて、巾1ｍほどのトレッキング・ロードしかありません。
ライ病(英語でLeprosy,Lepra,Leper）という言葉は差別用語で、使うことは好ましくありません。この半島では、ひどい差別を思い起こすために、ハンセン氏病（Hansen's Desease）という言葉とともにライ病という言葉が使われています。このため、かっての差別の反省を込めて、タイトルに敢えてライ病という言葉を使いました。
Kalaupapa Peninsula in Molokai Island once was a place that isolated the lepers, patients of Hansen's
disease, because it is surrounded by High cliff,1700ft,it is registered the highest sea cliff in the world by Guinness book. Even now these is only narrow and steep path,3ft, to go there.
The word, Laprosy, is the discriminatory language, so it is not good to use, but in this Peninsula sometimes use this word to reminds past terrible discrimination.
So I use Leprosy in the title by way of reflection.

崖の上にあるミュール（騾馬）・ライド・ツアーから朝早く出発です。この日は１０人５組のパーティでした。かなり強い雨が降っていて、黒いビニールを着ている人は、ごみ袋から顔と手を出してかぶっています。私は最後の馬で、スタッフは「最後のは最良」だといっていましたが、はたして？？
From Mule Ride Tour company, it is top of the cliff, we stared early morning in heavy rain. Some people wore the black garbage bag. We are 5 couples. I rides the last mule. Staff said to me "the last on is the best one". "Really???"

細い急こう配の道を下っていきます。ガイドブック(日本語のも、英語のも）には騾馬は四つ足だから崖から落ちる事故は今まで全くない、時々落馬事故はあるが、と書いてあります。
急こう配を下るので、ガックガックと揺れますので、自分が落ちることは気遣わねばなりません。
We went down the steep bud road. Many guide books, Japanese and English version, say mule has 4 legs so it has never slept down the cliff, it happened only people fell from the mule. So I cared about myself but mule.

土砂降りの雨で水が流れていて、岩だらけの道はつるつるして歩いて下るには大変です。それにしてもなぜか騾馬たちは厭味ったらしくがけっぷちを選んで歩きます。
私の騾馬の「アリカちゃん」(北極という意味、私の孫の親友と同じ名前ですぐ憶えられた）は、道草はくうし、遅れがちになる不良娘でした。
Water was flowing on the rocky trail. It was so slippery to walk. Every Mules walked just beside the edge of a precipice as if they wanted to scare us.
My mule,named Alika(same pronunciation of the name of my granddaughter's best friend, easy to remember), means the North Pole, was lazy girl, ate glass, was behind the group.

それが突然がけから転落しました。小生は少し乗馬の経験があるので、最後まで馬の上にとどまって道のほうに落ちたので、体もカメラも無事でした。「アリカ」は3ｍも垂直に近い崖を落ちて、木に引っかかり、悲しげな眼でこちらを見あげています。クレーン車とかが入れる場所ではないので、可哀そうだけどこの騾馬はもうダメだなと思っていると、スタッフが手綱を引き、本人も四つ足であがいて上がってきてしまいました。山羊が崖を自由に行き来するのは知っていましたが、騾馬にそんな能力があるとは思いませんでした。
こちらも気が動転していて、この写真を撮るのが精一杯で最高のシャッターチャンスを逃しました。スタッフの右下に茶色に見えているのが「アリカ」です。
Suddenly Alika fell over a precipice. I have a little experience to ride house so stayed on the house as long as I could and fell down on the path. NO damage to my body and camera.Alika fell 3m below the vertical cliff and got caught in the bush and looked at me sorrowful big eyes. I thought Alika could not survive because we could not use crane at such narrow path. But staff pull her bridle and Alika crawl on the cliff. I know the goat can climb the rocky cliff but don't know mule has same ability.
I missed good shutter chance because I lost my head.
Something brown of right side a Staff was Alika.

スタッフは心配そうに私を気遣いましたが、私が大丈夫だというと、「あなたはカウボーイだ」とほめて、またあの「アリカ」に乗せました。「アリカ」は何もなかったような顔をしていましたが…
Staff asked me about my condition with worried look. I said all right!  He praised me " You are a Cow-Boy!" and support me to ride a same mule,Alika again. Alika's face looked as if  "nothing happened", but for me...

「アリカ」に対する信頼を全く失った私にとってはそれからの道中、いつ落ちるかと恐怖の連続でした。
I went down more narrow and steep path with fear of fall from the cliff. After this I could not trust Alika at all.

一時間半の崖下りでやっと半島の草原につきました。ほっとしたその瞬間3頭の騾馬がなぜか疾走し始めました。もちろんバカ馬「アリカ」も！最初の写真で、ブルーのレインコートを着ていた70歳過ぎのオーストラリアから来ていた女性が、かなり踏ん張っていたのですが、落馬。もう一人比較的若い男性も落馬。小生は情け容赦なく手綱を引き締めて無事でした。二人とも骨折しヘリコプターで運ばれてゆきました。5組中2組が脱落する「信じられないような」ツアーです。
After one and half hour we arrived at the flat grassy plain. Just as I felt quite relieve three mules suddenly broke into a gallop. One is my stupid "Alika" of course.
The Austrian lady with blue raincoat, may be over 70years old, fell down after trying to stay on. The other,comparatively young man also fell down. And I pulled the bridle mercilessly hard and Alika unwillingly stopped. Two bloke bone and carried by Helicopter, no ambulance car. It was incredible tour, two couple to 5 dropped out.
