カールスミス公園 Carlsmith Beach Park

私のコンドーのすぐそばは、カールスミス・ビーチ・パークという素晴らしい公園です。この写真は、たまたま屋根に上がれた時に撮ったものです。
Near my apartment there is a wonderful park named Carlsmith Beach Park. This photo took from the roof of the apartment.

入江で波も静かで、シュノケールにはもってこいのところで、土日は家族連れがたくさん来ています。
The place forms an inlet, and wave is very calm so it is good spot of snorkeling. On weekend it was crowded with many families.

海中を撮るために、防水カメラを買いました。 買値は12,000円といったところで、水中10ｍまではだいじょうぶです。
To take the photo of submarine I bought a waterproof Camera, it is not so expensive, about $120, but 10m water resist.

そこで、水中写真を…眼鏡が必要な私は、ファインダーをよく見れないのでなかなかうまく取れません。上の写真には、魚が写っていますが、偶然です。
I took these photos but it was very difficult for me to see finder in the sea because I need glasses. I took fish by accident.

ただ、海に持って入れるので、海の中から岸を見た写真が取れます。建物は私のコンドーです。
この日は大潮で、潮はかなり引いています。クリックして写真を拡大し、手すりに注目してください
But I could bring it in the sea so I took a picture of shore from the sea. White building is my apartment. This day was a season of the spring tide so very big ebb tide. Click the photo to enlarge and attention to the handrail.

 

 

満ち潮のときはこの状態ですから、そうとう引いているのがわかると思います。

This is a photo at high tide. You can see the difference of high and ebb.

 

東側に向いているので、真っ赤な夕陽はみえませんが、なかなか情緒のある夕暮れです。東京近辺でしたら、恋を語らう二人連れでいっぱいになりそうですが、ここではそんな二人を見たことがありません。
It is facing east so we cannot see red sunset  but it has a great deal of atmosphere. If it is near Tokyo, so many couples gather and have a nice conversation but I have never seen such a couple here.



ハワイアンモンク アザラシ Hawaiian Monk Seal

 



友人（アラン）が4WDでなければいけない秘密のビーチがあると誘ってくれました。なるほどひどい悪路（これを道というならば）で、相当の技術もないといけません。
My friend, Alan, invited me to go secret beach, where only 4WD vehicles can go. Indeed it was a awful road, if we call it "road". It is necessary not only 4WD but also high driving technique.



後ろから来る車も苦戦しています。
The car followed us also did a hard fight.

はたして通れるかどうか、友人のお嬢さんが確認しています。もし亀の子状態になったら4WDであろうがどうしょもならなくなってしまいます。国道からわずか2.4Kmの距離を50分かけておりました。
Alan's daughter checked it could pass a big projections. If the car became "turtle state", Japanese expression it means turtle body on the stone and 4 legs in the air, even 4WD could not go over.
Only 1.5ml from the high way it took 50 minutes.

苦労しただけあって、素晴らしい海岸です。マカラヴェナ・ビーチという名の、カメハメハ　スクールの所有地で、ゲートがあります。
It was worth a hard driving, extremely beautiful beach, named Makalawena. It was a private property of Kamehameha School, so there was a gate.

人もほとんどいません。あんな思いをしてくる物好きはあまりいませんし、それ以上に、行ったことのない人は、降りていけるという確信も、それ以上に登って帰ってこられるという自信もわかないでしょう。
There was a few person who was curious to overcame such hard drive. The man who has not been there has not a conviction to able to go down and to go up to come back.

海辺からすぐのところに、変なものが横たわっているのを、アランが見つけ、ハワイモンクあざらしだと教えてくれました。
Alan found a strange object near the shore and taught me that was a Hawaiian Monk Seal.

買ったばかりの水中用カメラをもってちかづきました。アランに危険だし禁じられているからあまり近づかないようにと注意されたので、この程度の距離から写真を撮ることで我慢しました。
I approached it with the water proof camera just I bought it. But Alan warned me not to go close because of danger and prohibited. So I had patience to keep this distance.

近くを通りかかった二人の女性が気が付かなかったので、教えてあげたら、びっくりして写真を撮り、この動物に詳しい人と見えて、いろいろ教えてくれました。

1.　このアザラシは、ハワイの固有種で、ハワイ固有の哺乳類は、もう一種、オペアペアという蝙　　蝠だけであること。
2.　ハワイ島には7~8頭しかいなくて、自分も前に一度見ただけであること。ニイハウ島には数十頭　いるとのこと。
3.　絶滅危惧種で、手厚く保護されていること。

21枚も写真を撮りましたが、彼（彼女?）が目を開けて、笑ってくれたのはこの写真だけでした。

Two girls passed by but they did not notice it so I taught it to them. They were very surprised and pleased and took many pictures. They were well acquainted with Monk Seal so taught me about it.
1. This Hawaiian Monk Seal is a Endemic spices of Hawaii. The native mammals of Hawaii are only two, Monk Seal and the bad named Opeapea.
2.There were only 7~8 Monk Seals at Big Island. She has seen it only once. Several ten Monk Seals are living at Niihau isl.
3.This is endanger spices and are protected with great care.

I took 21 photos of it, but only one is eyes open and smile.

キャプテン・クック記念碑（2） Captain Cook Monument(2)

 去年、ケアラケクア湾の対岸からはるかキャプテン・クック記念碑を望みました。ここからはカヤックで行くしか方法はありません。今回はあの稜線を下るトレイルに挑戦してみました。
Last year I looked over the Captain Cook Monument from the  opposite shore of Kealakekua bay. From this point there was no way to go there except by kayak. This time I challenged to go there through the trail at the mountain ridge of this picture.

トレイルの入り口には、マンゴーがたわわになっていましたが、残念ながら、半月ほど早くてまだ熟していませんでした。トレイルは滑りやすいこんな道をひたすら下っていきます。約3.2k、高度差は600mです。歩きにくい道です。帰りののぼりが心配で仕方がありませんでした。途中で若者4人組に追い越されました。心配そうな顔で、水は持ってきたかと聞いてくれました。二人で3本持ってきたので大丈夫と答えました。
There were many mango at the trail head but these did not ripen. What a shame, it was a half month early. The trail was like this, very slippy, and simply went down 2 ml and 2000ft. It was very hard to walk so I worried about return. On the way young group of 2 couples passed me by. They asked me with an anxious look whether I brought plenty water or not. I said "don't worry we, two, have 3 bottle of water"

 一時間半かかってようやく到着。塔の白いペンキが少し剥げかかっていました。
We took 1.5 hour to arrive at the monument, white paint was peeking off in spots.

すごい絶壁に面したきれいな水の湾です。
This bay faced high lava cliff and water was extremely clear.

 絶好のシュノケール・ポイントなので、コナからの観光船で来たお客がシュノケールを楽しんでいました。
So it was a very good for snorkeling. Many people came from Kailua Koa by sightseeing ship enjoyed it.

 こちらは、対岸からカヤックで来た人たちです。
They came from opposite shore by Kayak.

途中で我々を追い越して行った人です。ここまでこれてよかったねと話しかけてくれました。また水はあるかと聞いてくれました。あと一本しか残ってなくて、昼飯の時は我慢して、帰りの登りに備えようと思っていました。そうしたら、なんと2本恵んでくれました。日陰のないのぼり道、水は命です。彼らは命を分けてくれました。とてもチャーミングな二人ですが、それ以上に天使のように見えました。
A couple, who went ahead of us, said "Well done to come here, do you have water enough?" At  that time we had only one bottle so we thought that we could not take water at the lunch because had to keep it for return, climbing rout. I said so, then they gave us 2 bottles. At the long climbing and no shade rout Water was a life. they shared us a life. They were not only very handsome and lovely but angels.

 なんとマングースが彼らの荷物を狙っています。大声を上げたのですが、お菓子の小袋をくわえて逃げていきました。
彼らにこのブログのアドレスを渡し、帰国したらこのハイキングについて書くから、読んでねと頼みました。もし読んでいたら、われわれの心からの感謝を受け取ってください。
What a surprise, Mongoose had its eye on their knapsack. I shouted to scare it, but  too late it ran away with a little bag of the candy in its mouth.
I handed him my card with this blog address and asked them to read my blog I would write about this trip when I back to Japan.

みんな楽しそうに泳いでいます。もし私が泳いだらたぶん帰れなくなるでしょう。
Every body enjoyed swimming. If I swam I could not go back.

さあ、帰りです。我々にとって上りは、二倍から下手すると三倍時間がかかります。はるか下のほうに馬でトレッキングしている人が見えました。まさか追いつかれないだろうと思ったのですが…
Now it's time to go back. We need double or triple hours to crimb the way back.
I saw people on the  horse far below. I had never thought that they would catch up on me.

半分来たところで追いつかれました。四本足があると強いですね！後で調べたら乗馬のツアーは一人100ドルでした。この時ほどうらやましいと思ったことはありません。もっとも1時間45分ほどでのぼれました。
ところで、別れるとき、彼らに日本のお菓子を車のサイドミラーにくくりつけておくからといいました。ところが、戻ってみたらおせんべい3枚と、ヨクモック2,3本しか持ってきていませんでした。気は心でおいては来ましたが、すべて飲み干した貴重な水のお礼にしては、ささやかすぎました。
もう一度、「ありがとう」といいます。
At the half way they caught up us, because horse has 4 legs. Later I knew Horse back tour is $100 for one person. I envied them very much. But we could go back only 1hour and 45minuts.
By the way when I said good-bye to that kind people I promised them I would leave Japanese sweet at their car's side mirror. But when I arrived my car I recognized I had only 3 rice cake(osenbei) and 2 or 3 shortbread.
I left them because it is the thought that counts, but too small for precious water, we drunk all of them. We say "Thank you" again!!

キャプテン・クックの記念碑 Capten Cook Monument

ハワイの発見者である、ジェームス・クック船長が原住民に襲われて死亡した場所に白亜の記念碑が建っています。ここケアラケクア湾は水が澄んでシュノケーリングに絶好の場所ですが、船で来るか稜線にあるトレッキング･コースをたどるしか行くことができません。最初トレッキングするつもりでしたが、かなり荒れたコースだと聞いたので中止しました。カヤックでここから渡ることもできるのですが、カヤックなど経験がないのであきらめました。後で聞くとさほど難しいこともないとのことなので、この次は挑戦しようと思っています。
Over Kealakekua Bay there is a white monument for the Captain Cook who was the discoverer of Hawaii island and was kill at this place by native Hawaiians. Around there it is very clear sea so good place for a snorkel, but we can approach there only by ship or trekking on the skyline. At first I planed to go trekking but waitress of Manago Hotel said this was very rough rout so I gave up this plane. There were many rental Kayak shops at this side but I had never rowed this, I also gave up the idea of going to the monument.
Later I heard rowing Kayak was not so difficult. I will try next time.

秘密の砂浜 Secret beach

カイルア・コナから50ｋほど南に、ほとんど人の行かない静かなビーチがあるというので、探検してみました。島を周遊しているハイウェイのはるか下に村落があり、そこのミロリイ･ビーチ･パークの奥にあるとのことでした。
Guide book said there is a empty beach 30 miles south from Kailua Kona so I went there. There is a small village far below the Mamalahoa Hwy and it
has the park named Milolii beach park. This secret beach is the inner part of the park.
                            
そこの住人は、あまり友好的でないと英語版のガイドブックに書いてありましたが、とんでもない、今まで見たこともないような素晴らしい笑顔で迎えてくれました。
The guide book also said the residents were not friendly to outsider. That's ridiculous! The lovely smiles that I have never seen welcomed us.

秘密の海岸、ホノマリノ(マウイ島に同じ名前の有名なビーチがあります)に行くトレイルの最初は海水に浸かっていました。底は溶岩の砂利なので、痛いのですが、靴をぬらすわけにはいきません。
The trail head to Honomalino, secret beach, was flooded below the sea. The bottom of the sea was lava rock so we felt little bit pain to walk with bare foot but we must not get shoes wet.

そしてこんな道を20分ほど歩くと、自分たちだけの海岸ともいえる場所に出ます。
We walked such a path for 20 minutes to the beach that was just like our own beach.

今日は混んでいました。
It was crowded today.

 椰子の林が南国の情緒をかもし出してくれています。
The palm grove created tropical atmosphere.

倒れた椰子の木が切ってありました。なるほど、季節の変化がないため全く年輪がありません。
The fallen palm was cut. Hawaii has no seasonal changes so it had no tree rings.

新黒砂海岸 New Black Sand Beach

カラパナの村にはその美しさで有名な黒砂海岸がありました。しかし村も椰子林も、1990年の溶岩流で壊滅してしまいました。(この写真は絵葉書を借用しました)
Once there is a famous and beautiful Black Sand Beach in Kalapana. But 1990 Lava flow has devastated the village, palm grove and beach. (This photo is not mine but post card)こんな溶岩が後から後から押し寄せてきてはひとたまりもありません。そのカイムビーチと呼ばれた黒砂海岸は、現在15mも下にあります。後ろの白い煙は現在も流れている溶岩流です。プオウオウ火口とクパイアナハ・ポンドからの溶岩流は１９８３年から今も続いています。100平方キロを覆いつくし、７４万坪（２４０万平方メートル)の新しい土地を海の中に生み出し(所有者はハワイ州政府）、約２００件の家を破壊しています。
Such massive and continuous lava flow We have no way to prevent them but just escape. That Kaimu beach is now more than 50feet beneath. White smoke of background is also lave that is flowing now.
From 1983 to now Lava from Pu'uOo Crater and Kupaianaha pond covered 40 square miles, made 600 acres of new land in the ocean (owner of this land is State of Hawaii) and destroyed 200 homes.


新しくできたこの海岸を昔の美しい椰子の茂る黒砂海岸にしようと夢見た女性がいました。そして呼びかけました、椰子の実を一つここに持ってきてくださいと。やしのみはハワイでは道端によく落ちています。が、軽いものではありません。
This is new Black Sand Beach. One lady dreamed to make beautiful Beach with Palm grove again, and appealed to many people to bring one coconut here. It is no rare matter to see the coconut on the road side, but it is little bit heavy and big cannnot carry it in your pocket.


黒い砂に置かれた椰子の実は、相当の確率でこのように芽と根を出します。椰子は生命力がありますね。

The coconut putting on the black sand sprouts and roots like this high probability. Coconut has amazing ability to survive.

彼女の夢は叶おうとしています。後は時間を掛ければ美しい椰子林が次の世代に残されるでしょう。なんと美しい風景と心根でしょうか。ちなみにその女性はそのとき既に病んでいた癌で他界されたと聞きました。
Yes! Her dream is coming true. We only need "time" to leave beautiful palm grove and beach for next generation. Look at this wonderful sight and feel the noble mind of all people.

I heard that lady passed away by cancer that had already suffered from when she talked about her dream to others.

ヌーディスト・ビーチ Beach used by nudists

道に車が何台も駐車しているので、かなり高い崖を降りてみると、底には小さな砂浜があって、海水浴をしていた。よく見ると(画面をクリック)何人かは水着をつけていない全裸なのです。
Many cars were parking beside the road, so I thought there were something fun at the beach. Down the high cliff I reach little black sand beach, many people enjoyed swimming there.
To my surprise, some of them wore nothing, all naked. (click photo)


エデンでりんごを食べる前と同じで、裸でいることを別に恥ずかしいと思ってもいない様子です。
私は、一眼レフのカメラを持って入ったのですが、誰もなんとも言いませんでした。もちろん裸の人にレンズを向けて｢ハイ!チーズ｣などとはやりませんでしたが。
As if before we made original sin, nobody thought it is shy to be naked or to see naked ones.
I brought a big camera into a beach but no one complained about it.
Of course I neither focus to them nor said "Hey! you! Say cheese"

楽器に合わせて唄ったり踊ったり、日光浴を楽しむ人もいれば、荒波にもかかわらず泳いだり、それぞれが自分なりの楽しみ方をしていた。ここはエデンの園、まだへびはいない。
Some one dancing and singing with old Hawaiian instruments, some one sunbathing or swimming in rough sea. Everybody enjoyed own way.
It is the Garden of Eden but snake dose not come yet.
