レインボーフォールに飛び込む？ Jump into Rainbow Fall?

ハワイ島では素晴らしい虹が見れると書いたばかりですが、虹の名所「レインボーフオール」では虹を見たことがありません。
We can see wonderful rainbow in the Big Island. But I have never seen rainbow at Rainbow  Fall.

 

 その代わりに、一人の女性がレインボーフォールに飛び込むため、この世（比岸）に別れを告げているのが見えました。高所恐怖症気味の私には信じられない光景です。
Instead I saw a woman sending a farewell to this world (Japanese call it "shore of this side") because she might be jumping into the fall. I am little bit acrophobia so it is incredible to sit on an edge of high cliff.

 

でも、彼が迎えに来たためあの世(比岸)から戻ってきました。よかったよかった。

But her boyfriend came to get her, she came back from the other world(Japanese say it "opposite shore").

ワイピオ渓谷（2） Waipio Valley (2)

 

 ワイピオ渓谷へのハイキングに挑戦しました。
この写真は展望台からで、素晴らしい景色で、ハワイ島ツアーの定番の場所です。
I challenged Waipio Valley hike. This photo is the valley from Waipio Lookout, the standard tour point of Hawaii. Marvelous View!

問題は渓谷に下る道で、1kmで250m下る、つまり25％の傾斜でかろうじて舗装はされているものの1車線の場所が多く、普通の車ではとても行けません。今回は友人の4WDで。
前に行くのは、友人が昔教えたことのある生徒の車で、案内役を買ってくれました。
It is very hard way to go down the valley, 800ft down while 1.6ml, a road with an inclination of 25 degrees. It is roughly paved but many part of this raod is one lane, so we cannot go with ordinary car. This time I went there with my friend's 4WD car. The ahead is the car of the former student of my friend, he offered our guide to the Valley.

谷間で降りるとこんな道で、放し飼いの馬　(野生の馬ではないと思いますが)　が道をうろついています。もちろん馬糞も。
The road of the bottom is such condition and free-range houses ( wild houses?) walked along the road. Of course also many droppings.

こんな林の中を行くと、途中で倒木に道をふさがれたりして。かっての生徒が鉈を取り出して木を片付けて道を開きます。
We went through the narrow road in the woods and it was stopped by fallen tree. The former student took out a hatchet to open the road.

道の終点にはこんな廃墟がありました。ここは観光スポットとしてカフェを開くつもりで建築したのですが、住民や自然保護運動の反対にあって、途中で断念したものです。
The end of this road, there is a ruins. That was constructed for the cafe of sightseeing spot but gave up to construct by opposition movement of residents and the conservation movement.

片側は渓谷を通して海が見えます。
One side of the cafe was faced the sea through the valley.

反対側は、ハワイ州で最も高いヒイラヴェ滝が見えるという、確かに景観に優れた場所です。
建築を断念して、ビショップ財団に1ドルで売ったとか。
今日はほとんど水が流れていませんでした。
Opposite side was faced Hiilawe falls, it is the tallest water fall in the State of Hawaii. It is such a wonderful location indeed. But gave up construction and sold it to Bishop Foundation for $1 or not.
Today there is little water at the falls.

タロイモ畑に入るために、谷の霊に許可を求める聖歌を歌います。ワイピオはハワイ島でも最もマナ(霊力)ガ強いところです。白いシャツの女性が高校のハワイアン・カルチャーの先生で、生徒4人を連れてタロイモ畑の実習に連れてきています。
To enter Taro field they sang a chant to ask permission to the spirit of the valley. Waipio valley has the most powerful Mana (spiritual power) in Hawaii Isl. The lady with white shirts is a high school teacher of the Hawaiian Culture. She took four students to training actual work at Taro field.

ここから下っていくとタロイモ畑があります。
Going down here there is Taro Field.

ワイピオ渓谷 Waipio Valley

ヒロから19号線を北に上がっていくと、映画｢ホノカア･ボーイ｣(倍賞千恵子の独り舞台だったような気がしますが) の舞台になったホノカアから240号を経て、ワイピオ渓谷の絶壁に行く手を阻まれます。高さ約300m.　ここから20kmぐらいはこれと同じような渓谷がいくつもあります。
新しい島ハワイ島では最も古いコハラ山脈 (火山だがもう活動はしていない) のふもとで、百万年近く雨の浸食を受け、キラウエアやマウナ･ロアのふもと (生まれたばかりの土地) とは全く違った景観を示しています。
なお、最北のカウアイ島などは7百万年以上経っている。
車道はあるのですが、この崖をアメ車のコンパクト･レンタカーで下りる勇気はさすがの私にもなく、ツアーに頼りました。(降りていく自信はあったのですが、問題は帰りで)

Go to north by Rout 19 and turn right to Rout 240 at Honokaa town, it was a main stage of movie"Honokaa Boy" (This movies was monopolized by the Actress Chieko Baisyou, I think), this road is blocked by high cliff, almost 300m down. It is Waipio Valley. Many same kind of deep valleys are there in next 20 miles. Here, the foot of Kohara extinct Volcanoes is oldest part of the island, near 1 million years old, and has been eroded by water and wind. They showed quite different land scape from new born land Kilauea and Mauna・Loa .
It has a way to go down the valley by car but I have no courage to go by my economy class 2WD American rentacar. Yes I could go down but how to come back. So I went there by shuttle tour.

絶壁の下は、かなり長い渓谷で奥のほうにヒイラベの滝という水量は少ないが高さ400mのハワイ州で最も高い滝があります。このようにして最北のポロル渓谷までのいくつもの渓谷ができているが、ワイピオ渓谷以外は車では入れなません。
Under the great cliff there is big and long scale of valley and Hi'ilawe falls are there deeper part of the valley. The height are almost 400m, the highest water fall in the Hawaii State. Many eroded big valleys are lying here to northernmost Pololu Valley. Another valleys cannot go in by cars.
ここには現在約50人ぐらいが住んでいて、昔からの常用食タロイモを栽培している。ヒロに大被害をもたらせた1946年の津波は高さ10mにもなったそうだが、マナという霊力のお蔭で死者は出なかったそうな。
There live about 50 peoples now and making Taro potatoes, pound into paste, they become very traditional Hawaiian foods named Poi. Please try them when you'll come to Hawaii, I ･･･never again. The big Tidal waves of 10m high that brought big disaster in Hilo came here 1946, but no one dead here by the grace of magical power of this valley, Mana!.
