大地震と津波（7） tremendous earthquake and tidal wave(tsunami)（7）

津波から6ヶ月経過しても、気仙沼にはまだ大きなごみの山がいくつも残っています。ボランティアたちの主な仕事の一つは、こういったものを家から運び出し、紙、プラスティック、木、コンクリート、鉄などに分別して、このような場所に捨てることです。
このボランティア活動の最初のミーティングで、「これらのものは、被災者たちの貴重なそして思い出のこもった財産だったので、決して単なるごみだと思ったり、口に出したりしないように」と言われたことが印象に残ったそうです。
6 months passed from Tsunami but there are big mounts of debris in Kesennuma city.
The main work of Volunteers was to get out these object from the houses and to sort them to paper, plastics, wood, concrete, steel, etc. and to bring them to a place like this.

At the first meeting of this volunteer activity they were told "These objects were very important and memorable properties for victims so you never call them as mere trashes"

このブログの記事と写真は、気仙沼に学生ボランティア（学ボ）として参加した、フランス人からのものです。このチームは16人の学生で構成されていました。日本人だけではなく、カナダ人、インド人、台湾人、二人の韓国人とフランス人が含まれていました。リーダーは日本財団から派遣された日系アメリカ人です。
大柄な白人がフランス人です。彼は調布市の生涯学習プログラムにおける私の英語の先生です。（オリーブという名前のクラスで、毎週火曜日の2時に開催されています。参加を歓迎します。）私の英語がセクシーなフランス訛りが混ざるのはこの先生のせいです。
The reports and photos of this blog are from the French man who attended as student volunteer(Guku-Vo) at Kesennuma City. This team was composed 16 students, not only Japanese but Canadian, Indian, Taiwanese, two Koreans, French and leader who is Japanese American sent from Japan Foundation.

The big and White guy is a French, he is my teacher of English Conversation Class (named Olive) of Life Long Learning Program of Cyofu-City. It is the reason why my English has a little bit of sexy French accent.

これが彼らが泊まった家です。普通の個人の家で、津波で3階まで水につかっりました。1階が台所と食堂、2階が作業用の道具や被災者のために寄付されたものが置いてある倉庫、そして、3階に17人全員が寝たそうです。

地震直後、フランス政府は避難勧告を出し、2機のジェット機を避難のために派遣してきました。しかし彼は日本にとどまりしかも夏休みを利用して学ボに参加したのです。なぜ彼はこのハードなボランティア活動に参加したのか？
彼曰く、「自分は多くの日本人から親切にしてもらった、そして東北の人々は今助けを必要としているから」
It was the house where they were staying. It is ordinary private house and was flooded  up to the 3rd floor. The 1st floor was the kitchen, 2ne was a storehouse of working stuff and donation for victims and 3rd floor was sleeping room for all,17.

Just after the earthquake he was suggested to leave Japan by French Government and they sent 2 airplanes for evacuation. But he stayed in Japan and attended Gaku-vo held by Japan Foundation during his summer vacation.
Why he decided to join this severe Activity?
He received so many assistance from many Japanese people and people of Tohoku need lot of help, he said.
His parents who are living near Mont-Saint-Michel are worried about him so much, even now.

彼らにとって、畳の廃棄は重労働でした。何しろ水を吸って重いし、すごい臭いがするし、加えて大きな蟻が巣を作っていて、怒った蟻が手に噛み付くそうです。

もちろん日本に来るまで、畳なんか見たこともないし、それどころか、地震自体が初めての体験でした。そのとき彼は大学の4階にいて、ビルがビシビシいったのに驚き、手でパソコンのモニターを押さえるのが精一杯だったそうです。

揺れが長く強いのに驚いたものの、ＴＶで津波が押し寄せてくるのを見るまでそれほどひどい地震だとは思わなかったそうです。もちろん家族に「私は大丈夫だ」とメッセージを送りました。

It was very hard work for them to dispose the Tatami mats. They were very heavy keeping water absorbed in them and with strong smell, in addition sometimes  the huge ants made nest and angry ants bit hands.

Of course he did not know Tatami until he came to Japan. Far from it earthquake is quite a new experience for him. At that time he was at 4th floor of University and was surprised the building was smacking and he could only hold PC monitor.

When he saw the image of the tsunami on TV he realised it was so strong. He sent a message to his family in France "I am fine!"

                            

ある日、彼らは小さな谷で働きました。そこは家々が完全に破壊されています。すごい湿度です。何しろ大量の水がまだ大地に残っているからです。後ろには海水でやられ、茶色になった木々が見えます。

彼は2011年の4月から調布市にある国立　電気通信大学の博士課程で勉強しています。最初コンピューター･サイエンスを学び、現在はＥ-ラーニングと社会知能情報の研究室にいます。

One day they worked in this small valley where houses have been completely destroyed. Humidity was very high since there were still a lot of water in the ground. In the background trees turned brown as they have been burnt by the salt of the sea water.

He is now studying at National University of Electro Communication to get PhD from April 2011. He studied Computer Sciece before and now he is in a laboratory about E-Larning and Social Intelligence.

アカカの滝、虹とキス Akaka fall with rainbow and kiss

アカカ･フォールのすぐそばに、カフナ･フォールというこのまがくれに見える滝があります。視界を妨げている木の枝を剪定したら、さぞかしいい滝なんだろうなと思わせます。
ところで、公園の駐車場が有料になりました。 ＄5です。駐車場の手前の道端に置くと＄2です。ちょっとせこい感じですが、でも公園がきれいに保たれるなら良いかとも思います。
Near the Akaka fall there is another fall named Kafuna Fall. I thought if trim trees around the fall, we can see one more wonderful fall.
By the way parking was charged recently. $5 in parking lot and $2 roadside. Little bit stingy but these money used to keep the park clean it is worthwile. 

お金を払ったせいか、今日の滝は水量豊かで、しかも二重の虹まで 架けてくれました。ヒロ市内のレインボウ･フォールでは見たことがないのですが。
Because of paying fee, the fall was plenty of water and double rainbow appeared. I have never seen the rainbow at the Raibow-Fall in Hilo.

近くで、カップルが手を伸ばして自分のカメラでキス･シーンを取ろうとしていたのですが、上手く撮れていないようなので、撮ってあげました。私のカメラで撮ってもいいかと聞くと、”シュアー”といってくれたので、この写真を撮りました。彼女が「あなたも私にキスをするか？」　”シュアー”といおうと思っていたのですが、そうは聞いてくれませんでした。もっともすぐそばに私の奥さんがいましたから･･･
This couple wanted to take picture of kissing by stretching out his arm with own camera, but they could not take picture well. So I took it with his camera. And I asked them " May I take the same scene with my camera" She said "Sure!" So I took this. And she said to me " Do you kiss me and take photo like this?" I intended to say "Sure!" But she did not say so. Anyway my wife stood by me!!!

謎の湖ワイアウ湖(2) The mysterious Lake, Waiau (2)

なぜ、保水力がなく、雨の少ないマウナ･ケアの山頂付近にこんな湖があるのか？その答えは氷河です。

Why there is a lake in such place, ground has not the power to hold water and little rain? The answer is Glacier.

                                      
この付近は、かって氷河に覆われた場所でした。（マウナ･ケアの氷河期ーラベルーマウナ･ケア参照）　岩石を見ると、他の場所とは違って噴き出した溶岩が氷河に出会って、あっという間に固まったすごく硬くて大きい岩石がごろごろしています。この池の地下にはまだ永久凍土があって水が浸透してしまうのを止めていると同時に、暖められてしみ出してきているのだと言われています。
It was covered with glacier at Ice Age around there. (see "ice age of Mauna Kea-Ravel-Mauna Kea") Different from other place of this mountain there are many big and very hard rock. When Mauna Kea erupted during the last ice age, glacier cap cooled the lava very quickly. The result is the big, dense and hard rock ware made.
Under this lake there is permafrost holding water and sun heats up and melts it so it percolate to the lake.

ほんのわずかですが、草も生えていて小さいハエみたいな虫もいました。水があると命は強靭な力を発揮するいい例でしょう。

湖畔で食べたおにぎりのおいしかったこと！

A few but grasses grow here and also little fly like insects fly. It is a good model that life is very tough with water.

What a delicious Omusubi (rice balls) it is, ate at the lake side.

謎の湖、ワイアウ湖（1） The mysterious Lake, Waiau（1）

マウナ･ケアの頂上付近に不思議な湖があるということで、行くことにしました。6月中旬だというのに、日陰にはまだ雪が残っています。
I had heard about mysterious lake near the summit of Mauna Kea so I went there. There was snow in the shadow, though it was the middle of June.

上から下がっていく道と、下から上がっていく道があって両方とも約1.6kmです。帰りに上りは辛いと思い、下から上る道を取りました。実はこれが間違い。後でちゃんとした地図を見たら高度差が三倍ぐらいあり、しかも薄い空気になれていない歩き始めが登りだと辛いこと辛いこと。一時間以上かかりました。
「ここはハワイアンにとって神聖な湖なので、泳いだり、ボート遊びをしたり、ケルンを積んだりしないこと」という看板が。昔、ハワイアンが子どものへその緒を投げ込んで、健康を祈った場所で、この湖は底なしだと考えていたそうです。
There were two routs, down from upper place and up from the lower parking. Both are same distance, about 1mile. I thought it might be hard to clime when return, so I chose lower parking rout. But it was big mistake they were same distance but difference of latitude was three time higher than another rout and it was terrible hard to clime up at the beginning of walking because I did not use to thick air. I took over 1 hour.
There was a board like this. Old Hawaiians offered the umbilical cord (piko) of new born baby into the lake
to pray his health. Some one does now. It was thought as bottomless.
                                   
博物館で見るような火山弾がいたるところにごろごろしています。
There are many volcanic bombs which we can see in the museum around there.

やっと見えてきたのは、まるで水溜りといったようなものです。
After the hard trial I found the lake but it looked like a puddle.

近寄ってみると小さいけれど（約1300坪）、堂々たる湖（池？）です。高度は3968mで、アメリカで最も高いところにある湖です。

問題はなぜこんなところに恒常的な湖があるかということです。火山礫の大地は保水力がありません。ですからハワイ島には日本のような温泉がありません。湖もほとんどありません。その上、天文台が集まるほど晴天の多い場所で、大量の雨も期待できません。この水は何処から？

答えは次回に。

When I approach, it was small (1.5acre) but surely the lake (pond?) It is the highest lake in the USA at the 13020 feet high.

The question is why there is a permanent lake on such place. Lava rock cannot hold water, so there is few lake and hot spring in the Big-Island. Besides ratio of fine days are very high so many astronomical observatories gathered here. It means it cannot expect much rain.

How to keep this lake. Answer will be given next.

すばる天文台（3） SUBARU Telescope (3)

すばる天文台を下から見上げた写真です。建設開始以来20年の歳月を重ね、貫禄が付いてきました。（ちょっと汚れてきました。）右はケック天文台の一つです。
ところで、「すばる」という名前ですが、 知っている人は多いと思いますが、プレアデス星団の和名で「集まる」という意味です。（まさか、Xさんのように自動車の名前から取ったと思う人はいないでしょうね）
Looking up Subaru telescope. About 20years have passed since it began to construct so it shows a kind of dignity. (or little bit dirty) Right of Subaru is Keck 1 Observatory.
By the way Subaru is the Japanese word of Pleiades Star Cluster,it means "come togather"(surely you don't think it comes from the name of the car, like Mr.X)
                                     
すばるの隣人、双子のケック天文台ⅠとⅡです。 それぞれ六角形鏡を36枚組み合わせた直径10mの鏡を持ってます。この後ろにNASAの赤外線天文台があるのですが、写真をとりそこねました。
A neighbor of Subaru is Keck Ⅰand Ⅱ. They have 10m mirrors and each mirror is made of 36 hexagonal segments. There is NASA infrared telescope but you cannot see it because it is just behind the Keck. I missed to take picture.  

左から、CFMT（カナダ、フランス、ハワイ天文台）、ジェミニ・ノース天文台（ジェミニはふたご座という意味で、ジェミニ・サウスはチリのチェロ・パッチョンにあります。直径8.1m） 、ハワイ大学天文台、イギリスの赤外線天文台（世界最大の赤外線天文台）、そして右端にあるのが1968年に山頂に初めてできたハワイ大学天文台（直径0.6m）です。
From the left it is CFHT(Canada France and Hawaii observatory), Gemini North ( Gemini is the name of the Twin, one of the constellation of Zodiac. Gemini South is located on the mount Pachon,Chile.) ,University of Hawaii Observatory, United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (the world's largest infrared telescope) and University of Hawaii observatories which is the oldest one on this summit.(0.6m mirror)
                                           　
左がジェームス　クラーク　マックスウェル　サブミリメーター波天文台で、右がサブミリメーター波のアンテナ列です。左に見える大きな山が、マウナ･ロアで、右に雲の上にちょっと頭を出しているのがフアラライ山です。これでも標高2512ｍの山です。（フアラライ　ラベルー火山ー参照）
Left is James Clerk Maxwell Submillimeter Observatory and right is the array of Submillimeter antennas. Big mountain of left side is Mauna Loa and right side, top projected over cloud, is Mt. Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The splendid Cinder Cone is Puu Hau Kea. There is a mystic lake,Waiau Lake, over the hill. Trail of right side leads to the lake.

すばる天文台（2） SUBARU Telescope (2)

調整の必要から、望遠鏡が動き始めました。そしてミラーのカバーが開けられて、ミラー本体を見ることができました。写真の真ん中はミラーに上の光景が映っているものです。
We were very lucky to see the telescope was moving and the uncovered the mirror so could see the body of it for the sake of its adjustment. At the center of this picture we can see the upper side of telescope reflected in the mirror.

                                    
ミラーの厚さはわずか20ｃｍ、直径8.2ｍの鏡を動かすと、当然ひずんでしまいます。 そこで、日本の最新鋭の技術アクチュエーターが活躍します。ボルトのように見えるのがそれで、261本で鏡の後ろから押して正確な形を維持します。何かが鏡に映っているのがここでも見えます。
Thickness of the mirror is only 8 inches, so when the heavy mirror, 27feet diameter, moves it inevitably warps.
Adjust to the collect figure there are 261 actuators pushing behind the mirror, those look like kind of bolt. That was new technology of Japan.　Something were reflected on the mirror.

ノズルは、ここからドライアイスを噴き出して鏡を清掃するのだそうです。7月8日の読売新聞に、主焦点のカメラから液体がもれ出て、鏡を汚し、修理に1週間かかるとの記事がありました。このノズルが活躍しているのかもしれません。
We can see many nozzles. They spray dry-ice to clean up the mirror. According to the Yomiuri Newspaper of 8th July some liquid leaked from the primary focus camera and soiled the mirror and 1 week necessary to mend it. I guess these nozzles are working for it.

ここは天文台のオペレーションルームです。
ミスすばるはここの広報担当で、ハワイ大学卒業の日本人です。我々をガイドしてくれました。記事は彼女の説明を書き写したものです。ただし、ノートを取っていなかったので、記憶間違いがあるかもしれません。違っていたらコメント蘭で訂正してください。
以前、散歩しているときに可愛いシャムネコにあいました。可愛がっていると飼い主が帰ってきて、ちょっと立ち話をしました。それが彼女で、案内の途中で互いにそれと気づきました。
ミスターすばるは、望遠鏡の技術者で、このブログで紹介したハマクワの英雄（ラベルー歴史ー）の作者のご主人です。巨大なパワーシャベルを買って、庭造りに励んでいます。カウマナ溶岩洞窟（ラベルー火山ー）に案内してもらったこともあります。狭い世の中です。
It is the operation room of the Observatory.
Miss Subaru is the staff of the public relation section of this observatory. She was Japanese and graduated from University of Hawaii. These description about Subaru are from her explanation, but I did not write note so there are some mistakes of my memories.
When I took walk around my apartment, I met a Siamese cat and I was petting her, at that time master came back and chatting little while, that is She. We recognized each other on the way.
Mr.Subaru is a technician of the telescope and husband of the author of  the comics story "Hamakua Hero" that was introduced in the blog.(see Ravel-History-) He bought a gigantic power shovel and is making his garden. And he guided me Kaumana Cave ( see Kaumana lava cave. Ravel-Volcano-)

すばる天文台（１） SUBARU Telescope (1)

久しぶりに、マウナ･ケア山頂のすばる天文台の内部見学をインターネット（下記）で申し込みました。もっとも見学会は昼間ですし、レンズを覗いて星を見せてくれるなんて言うことはありません。無料です。
天文台までは自分で行かなければなりませんので、この小さなフォードで山頂まで、ドライブ。ちょっとスリルがあります。
I requested to entry a inside tour of SUBARU Astronomical Observatory through the Web-site after a long time.(http://www.subarutelescope.org/)　This tour is free but it held at day time so we cannot see the stars through the lens(anyway it has no lens to see)
We have to go there(top of the summit of Mauna Kea) by own way. So I went there by this little Ford, It was nervous driving.

これが望遠鏡の本体。垂直に立った状態です。上部の黒っぽく見えるところが、主焦点のカメラです。一般の反射望遠鏡ではここから直角に円筒の外に光を導いて覗きます。すばるでは当時、8ｍ級望遠鏡では珍しく、主焦点にカメラを設定しています。800万画素のＣＣＤ10枚を使って、天体写真で有名なパッブル天文台のカメラの100倍の視野を得ています。
It is the mainframe of telescope standing vertical.The black object of upper side is the camera of main focus.Our reflection telescope leads the light from there to outside of cylinder and sees stars.
Subaru has a camera at the main focus it was very rare of 8m class telescope at that time. It is taking photograph of stars using 10CCD of 800milion pixels each. It can get 100times wider field compare with Hubble Observatory, it is very famous about astronomical photos.

主鏡が納められている部分です。直径8.2メートルの一枚鏡で、最近まで世界一でした。現在一番大きいのはアリゾナの双眼大望遠鏡で8.3ｍの鏡が二枚あります。もっとも大事な部分なので、当然カバーされています。鏡だけの値段は100億円でアメリカ製です。
昨年、下の階に下ろしてガラスの表面のアルミ・コーティングをリニューアルしたとのことです。
It is the part primary mirror was kept. It is 8.2m diameter, largest mirror in the world until quite recently. Now the biggest two are Binoculars Large Telescope(BLT, name like sandwich) in Arizona,8.3m diameter both.　It is the most important part of telescope so it usually covered. It cost was $1billion, made in USA.
It was took down to downstairs and coated aluminum again last year.

第二の焦点である、カセグレン焦点に取り付けられているデジタルカメラ。(我々が使う小型のカセグレン型望遠鏡の焦点。)　主鏡の横に光を出す第三の焦点もありますが、名前を忘れました。

一般の見学で見れる望遠鏡はこんな感じですが、ちょっとした出来事があり、もう少し詳しく見ることができました。(続く）

It is a digital camera put at Casegren Focus.(we have small telescope of Casegren system) It has another focuses beside the mirror, but I forge their name.

These are the telescope which can see ordinary tour but little accident occurred so we could see more.(cont.)
