溶岩樹公園 Lava Tree State Park

モンキーポッドが生い茂る亜熱帯雨林の中に、大きな木が生えていない開けた場所があります。
In the subtropical rain forest with big monkey pods there is open space with no big tree.

キラウエアの東側の割れ目で1790年に起こった割れ目噴火の溶岩流の跡で、公園になっています。
It is the track of lava flow of 1790 fissure eruption in east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano. It is the State Park.

ここでは、茂っていた木に、パホエホエ溶岩がまとわりついていろいろな造形をなしていて、その名も溶岩樹公園と呼ばれています。これは溶岩に包まれた木が焼けてなくなってしまったものです。
The fast flowing Pahoehoe Lava met trees and made many strange forms here so this park is called Lava Tree Park. This is the tree wrapped by lava and burnt away.

木で冷やされた溶岩が固まったため、周りの溶岩が流れ去ってもこのように残ったものです。
Lava encountered wet cold trees and was cooled down and became solid. When the flow drained away there leaved lava towers like this.

 木の跡がトンネル状になっています。
Burned out tree made a little lava tube.

よく整備されていて、そぞろあるきするには最高の場所です。
This park is well maintained so it is very good place to stroll.

真っ赤な溶岩流 Red Lava Flow

こんな溶岩台地を３０分ほど歩いて溶岩流を見に行きました。もちろんガイドつきのツアーです。帰りは真っ暗になるので、個人で行った分には帰れなくなります。
I walked 30minutes on the lava plateau like this picture to see the lava flow. Of course I joined the tour with guide. If I went there alone I cannot return in the utter darkness.

溶岩流の迫力はものすごいものでした。生えたばかりの羊歯を飲み込む直前。
The lava flow was powerful. It was just before to burn the fern that recently came up.

これは同じところを、フラッシュ無しで撮ってみました。溶岩の熱をこちらのほうが感じられすかもしれません。
I took this photo without a flash lamp. You feel the heat of lava from this picture more than another.

私が溶岩に棒を突っ込んでいるところ。なんとなく逃げ腰なのは、怖いからではなくすごい輻射熱で熱いからです。 ドロドロに融けて柔らかいかと思っていましたけれど、思ったより硬い感じでした。
I was starking a bar into the lava. I made to run not because fear but horrible radian heat. I thought jelly melt lave was soft but actually it was not so.

 溶岩流をこんな近くで見られるのは、ハワイ以外ではあまりありません。爆発的噴火や火砕流の心配がないからです。
There are not so many place to see the lava such near distance like Hawaii. Volcanoes of Hawaii have little danger to explosion or pyroclastic flow.

それでもみているうちにどんどん押し寄せてきます。そろそろ引き上げ時。それにしてもガイドさんは（若い男の人です）懐中電灯だけでどうやって何の目印もない帰り道を見つけるのでしょうか。
Still, lava came rapidly to us. It was time to go back. But guide(young man) how to find the way back only with little flash right  without any marks.

キラウエアがゴロゴロ Kilauea rumbles

キラウエアの頂上の大カルデラの中にあるハレマウマウ･クレーターから噴き出していた噴煙は、今回（３月２日）はこんな状況。ああ、これはそろそろ収束するのかなと思いました。それでも観光客は煙が見えると喜んでいましたが。

The smoke from the vent in Halemaumau Crater of the summit Caldera was very thin that day(March 2). So I thought this eruption was about time to end. Such a thin smoke but visitors are glad to see them.

参考までに、前回行ったときの写真を載せておきます。いつもこんな感じでした。火口が赤く見えているのは夕方で少し暗くなってきたせいですが。

I put a picture of the last visit for reference, always it looked like this. The vent is seen red because of evening darkness.

ところが、３月６日の新聞にこんな記事が。頂上から東南東に１０キロほど行った山腹のプゥ・オーオー火口とその近くのナパウ火口との間にできた割れ目が噴火を始めたのです。この付近は、かってカラパナの村やロイヤル･ガーデンと呼ばれる地区を埋めた溶岩の源です。

この記事は日本の新聞にも載りました。

山頂の噴煙が少なかったのは、こちらのエネルギーをためこんでいたためだからと推測しました。

Suddenly Hawaii Tribune Herald carried items about the eruption on March 6. This fissure eruption occurred between Puu Oo crater and Napau crater, it is approximate 6 miles from the summit, a mountain side of Kilauea. Around there it was the source of lava flow which baried Kalapana village and Royal Garden Subdivision. This eruption was carried on the Japanese newspaper also.

The thin smoke at summit caldera means to keep the energy for this eruption, according to my authority.

翌日の朝６時２３分の飛行機で帰らなければならないので、どうすることもできず、ただマンションの７階から赤く染まる雲の写真でも撮れないかなと思ってやってみると、取れました。約４０Km離れています。
I had to return to Japan next morning by 6:23 plane, I could do nothing about this. But I supposed I could take  pictures of red dyed sky from 7th floor of my apartment . Yes I can!  It is 25 miles away from my apartment.

ホーレイ・パリ、大好きな場所 Holei Pali, my favorite place

キラウエア国立公園のチェイン･オブ･クレータ　ロードを下がりきり、後ろを振り返ると壮大な絶壁が続いているのが見える。これが、私の大好きなホーレイ･パリ、すさまじい光景です。（このブログのチェイン･オブ･クレーター･ロード（2）、ラヴェルーキラエウエアー参照）
Down the Chain of Crater Road in Kilauea National Park and look back, you see the magnificent and long cliff. It is the Holei Pali and it is the one of my favorite place. What a terrible sight it is! (refer Chain of Crater Road (2) of this blog. Ravel=Kilauea=)

                                  
溶岩に覆われた場所に所々緑が残っているところがあります。キプカといって溶岩流から
奇跡的に逃れた場所です。
There are a few calm forests among rough lava field. Those are called KIPUKA.　That is an island miraculously remained from the red-hot lava flow.

                                                  

パホエホエ溶岩の上にアア（ごつごつした溶岩）が流れたところ。この二種類は成分は同じだが含まれるガスの量で見た目が全然違ってきます。

It is the place new Aa lava ( lava with a rough and rugged surface) flowed on the Pahoehoe lava (with a smooth or ropy surface) There is no difference of  principal ingredients between two kinds of lava but difference of amount of gas contain changes the surface condition extremely.

ペトログリフ Petroglyph

ホーレイ・パリを降りきった所に、プウ・ロア･トレイルの案内板があります。約1.6kmほど歩くと初期のハワイ原住民がパホエホエ溶岩に刻んだペトログリフ（岩面彫刻）が見るための板張りの遊歩道に出ます。大絶壁をすぐそばに見ながらの楽なトレッキングです。（日陰はありませんが）

Down the "Holei Pali" we can see the board of "Puu Loa Petroglyph Trail", it indicates the trekking rout to the wooden promenade to watch the petroglyphs(rock carvings), these were carved by ancient Hawaiians on the Pahoehoe Lava.

It is easy, but no shadow and water, hike about 1.6Km seeing great cliff nearby.


現在、ハワイを象徴するのに使われている、人や魚、亀などの素朴なデザインがたくさん彫られています。この写真は右が頭の人の彫刻です。（あえて影の中に入るように撮ったのですが失敗!）
There are many carvings of naive design, man, fish or turtle etc. They are now some kind of symbol of Hawaii. This is a man, head is right side. (I intentionally took this picture in the shadow. but it was not effective.)

ハワイには随所にこのペトログリフがありますが、ここがもっとも集中していて5000以上あるといわれています。芸術としてはどうか分かりませんが、デザインとしてはいいものがたくさんあると思います。

なお、ここは子供の長寿を願ってへその緒を埋めた場所でした。こんなすさまじい景色の中、二人のハワイアンが遠くから子供抱いてここに来て、苦労して岩に穴を掘り、へその緒を納め、その子の幸運を祈っている情景を想像するだに、心温まる思いです。そんな気持ちにしてくれる、ここはそういう場所です。
There are many petroglyph fields in Hawaii, but this place is largest one, about 5000 of petroglyphs here. I cannot comment they are good or not as art, but many of them are very impressive as design.

This is the place parents put the umbilical cord of their child. When I imagine a scene, that pair of Hawaiian came here from distant with baby and made a hole and put umbilical cord and prayed baby's luck in this magnificent view, my heart feel warm and happy. It is very good place for me to feel like this.

ﾁｪｲﾝ ｵﾌﾞ ｸﾚｰﾀｰ ﾛｰﾄﾞ (2 Chain of Creaters Road (2)

チエイン　オブ　クレーター　ロードはこの大絶壁「ホーレィ・パリ」を下ってほぼ海岸のレヴェルに達します。この絶壁は地震により海側に地崩れしたためにできたものです。

Down this great cliff "Holei Pali" Chain of Crater Road arrives at sea level. This Cliff made by big earthquakes(of course very old ones), huge volume of land slipped into sea and fault scarps were made.

見事なパホエホエ溶岩の大平原です。しかしよく考えると一回の溶岩流はせいぜい数メートルの厚さしかありません。遠景から見ると単に色を塗ったような感じです。ハワイ島のマウナ･ロア、マウナ･ケアは標高で4000m以上、海底からの吹き上がりの高さはほぼ一万メートルで世界一高い山です。それがこんな薄いつまり流動性のある溶岩流の積み重ねできているのですから、気が遠くなる話です。前にも書きましたが、この大絶壁の向こう側にあるマウナ･ロアはそのヴォリュームも世界一で、富士山の100倍の重さがあるそうです。
Beautiful large field of Pahoehoe Lava. Think! one lava flow is only several meter thick, we see them far off they look like just painted on the wall.

Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are more than 4000m elevation, and they directly spouted out from the see bottom 5000m below so they have 10000m height, highest mountains in the world. It is incredible such height was heaped up such thin lava, very fluid. Mauna Loa is the most massive mountain in the world, it is 100 times larger than Mt. Fuji.

この道は、この溶岩流でふさがれてここまで。ここから十キロ以上、前に書いた、新黒砂海岸やﾇｰﾃﾞｨｽﾄ･ﾋﾞｰﾁのあるカラパナまで埋まっています。この溶岩流は2002年以降のものです。

ところで、傘を持ち長袖のラインウェアーを着た私の友人（私も同じ格好でした）と背景にいる短パンツとタンクトップの女性を見比べてください。日本人はいかに雨とか寒さに敏感か分かると思います。

This road was obstructed by lava from here to Kalapana about 10km. I wrote about New Black Sand Beach or Nudist Beach in my blog, they were another side of this flow, Kalapana side.This is 2002-Present flow.

Compare with my friend and the lady back ground, he had umbrella and took long sleeve rain ware but that lady wore shorts and tank top. You can see the Japanese is very sensitive about rain and cold weather.

ﾁｪｲﾝ ｵﾌﾞ ｸﾚｰﾀｰ ﾛｰﾄﾞ (1) Chain of Craters Road (1)

ﾁｪｲﾝ　ｵﾌﾞ　ｸﾚｰﾀｰ　ﾛｰﾄﾞは　ヒロから約30マイルかけて登ってきた高度1250mのキラウエア山頂から,その半分ぐらいの距離で海岸まで下ります。ジェット･コースターに乗っているように快適な道で、もちろん信号など一つもありません。（赤線の道、クリックすると拡大されます）

From the summit of Kilauea, its elevation is 1250m, Chain of crater road(red line) go down to the sea only 15ml, half distance from Hilo. So, we can drive comfortable as if we ride roller coaster, there is no signal, of course. (crick the map for enlargement)

キラウエアの山頂からしばらくは緑濃い亜熱帯雨林が続きます。

Around the summit we drive through the Rain Forest. They are very beautiful deep green forest.

ワラビのお化けのようなハプゥウ。潤い豊かなこのような森は、フォレスト･リザーブとして保護していることもあってハワイ島のいたるところにあります。もっとも野生の豚やヤギの食害にあっているところもたくさんあって、頭を悩ませています。

ところがあっという間に雨林を消滅させるものが･･･

It is Hapu'u, kind of fern, looked like monster bracken.

There are many forest with rich moisture like this in Hawaii, because States protect them as Forest Reserve. But they worried about wild pigs and goats which eat the fern and sprouts very much.

But there is bigger power that destroys the wide rain forest in one night. That is.....!

そう!　溶岩流です。緑豊かな雨林がこの光景に一変します。ｸﾚｰﾀｰの連鎖の始まりです。

Yea! Lava flow. Suddenly The rain forest change such devastation. It is the start of Chain of Crater Road.

このようなｸﾚｰﾀｰが道のすぐ横にあるものだけでも5っほど。ｸﾚｰﾀｰは溶岩を噴出した後空になった部分が陥没してできた穴です。その大きなものをカルデラと呼んで、キラウエアカルデラはその一つです。（阿蘇山のカルデラは、世界でも有数に大きなものです）

There are 5 or 6 crater just beside this road. Crater is the hole that is made the vent exhausts lava, so the collapse occurs to the empty space.
The big scale of crater are called Caldera, Kilauea Caldera is for example.

(The Mt. Aso Caldera is one of the world's most big Calderas.)

左奥に見える小高い丘が、一時猛威をふるったマウナ･ウルで、こちらは噴出物が丘を形成した溶岩円頂丘です。前の写真の広大な溶岩台地の源になった山です。

The little hill of left side is Mauna Ulu, the dome made of tephra and lava. Once Mauna Ulu raged and erupted huge volume of lave. The source of wide lava field of previous photo was Mauna Ulu.

ところどころに、キプカと呼ばれる、運よく溶岩流に巻き込まれなかった小さな古い林を見ながら道はまだまだ続きます。

The road continues still seeing Kipuka, little old forest they were not involved lava flow luckily,here and there.

夜の新火口 New vent at night

大部分が火山灰でなく水蒸気になったため、噴煙が白くなった新火口、噴火して早2年、そろそろ収束に入ると思いましたが。

Fume has become white because main ejecta is vapor、not volcanic ashes. It has been 2 years since the new vent opened in the Halemaumau creater of summit caldera. So I thought the eruption would be end soon.

夜になると、噴煙が赤く染まり、まだまだ火口の奥200mの溶岩が健在なのが分かります。

But at night smoke is dyed red. It means the lava is active 200m under the vent edge.

周囲が真っ暗になると、地獄の釜は煮えたぎっているのが実感できます。

When dark we feel that big cauldron of Hell(Buddhism teaches us the sinner will be thrown into the cauldron of inferno) is boiling now.

ﾌﾟｩ･ｵｰｵｰ噴火口 Heli tour to Pu'u O'o Vent

このヘリで約50分の、プゥ・オーオーツアーが＄210.　まずまず見ごたえがありました。

We went around Pu'u O'o vent about 50 minutes, $210 per person by this Helicopter. It was worth to pay.

1983年、プゥ・オーオーは大量の赤熱したマグマを吹き上げ活動を開始しました。それ以降、近くのクパイナハ火口の活動を伴い、世界で最も活動的な火山の一つになっています。しかし爆発的噴火でないため近くまでアプローチできるのが特徴です。

1983, Pu'u O'o vent begun eruption with blowing up massive white heat magma. Later joined activity of Kupainaha vent near Pu'u O'o Kilauea is one of the most activity volcano in the world. But it's action dose not explosive we can approach near by.

海に向かって流れ出る溶岩流。広大な面積を埋め尽くし海の中には新しい土地を誕生させています。空気に接している部分はまもなく冷えて固まるが、その中は保温されて熱く流動性を保ったまま溶岩を遠距離まで流す溶岩トンネルを形成しています。

Lava flow to the sea. The vast field were buried with lava, and making new land in the sea. Bank and top of the flow are cooled by air and become solid, but inside the flow it keeps heat and fluidity so it can flows lave to long distance. Finally liquid lave will drain out and be left long tunnel, called Lave Tube. There are many Lava tubes around there.

途中にある見晴らしのよい住宅地であったロイヤル･ガーデンを廃墟にしてしまいました。家が燃えなくともアクセス道路が閉ざされて使い物になりません。保険会社に保険金を請求したところどこも痛んだところがないので支払は無理だとのこと。家財を引っ越すこともできず、一種のタイムカプセルができてしまいました。

The Royal Garden Subdivision, Estate which had fine ocean view, was devastated in 1990. Many houses remains harmless but cannot live because the all access roads are buried. The Insurance company dose not pay money because of no damage on construction. Residents cannot remove furniture so houses become a kind of Time Capsule.

溶岩流 Lava Flow

非常に強い水蒸気爆発。まだ明るいのに真っ赤な溶岩が飛び散っているのが写真に写っている。

この溶岩は頂上のカルデラから来ているのではなく、この30年近く活動を活発化している中腹のプオゥオゥ火口およびクパイアナハの割れ目から、溶岩チューブをとおつて15km 以上流れてきている。

It is very strong vapor explosion. It was still blight but we can see red hod lava in this picture.

This lava did not come form the summit Cardelra but Puu Oo creator and Kupaianaha Rift of middle way of the mountain. They were very active this 30years. Lave did not run surface of the ground but made a tunnel, lava tube, without touch a cold air so they keep heat and liquidity, and run 15km to sea shore.

I forgot to bring tripod, so it is slightly blurred. But it gives some kind of power I think!!!

薄暮気の噴煙は芸術的。人の顔が2つとオスメスのライオンの顔が見えますか。

The fumes were very artistic when we saw them at twilight time. Can you recognize two men's profiles and two Lions, male and female.

そしてこのブログの冒頭においた写真と同じタイプのもの。
