溶岩流から守られた教会 Charch evacuated from Lava Flow

 スター・オブ・ザ・シーと呼ばれるこの教会は、1928年にカラパナの海岸沿いに建てられた美しい教会でした。
しかし、1990年カラパナを全滅させた溶岩流が迫ってきました。多くの住民はこの溶岩流で自分の家を失ったにもかかわらず、この教会を土台から切り離し避難させました。
現在はパホアから32kmほど行った新黒砂海岸に近いところに立っています。
This charming church, Star of the Sea, was built in 1928 near the beach of Kalapana. But in 1990 Lava flow was approaching this Church. This flow finally destroyed Kalapana completely. Community members, though many of them lost their own house, had to lift it from the foundations to move and save it just in the nick of time.
It is now built near the New Black Sand Beach 20ml from Pahoa.

 内部もとてもきれいです。ホナウナウ(西側)の近くに有名なセント・ベネディクト・ペインテッド教会という内部に聖画が書かれた小さな教会がありますが、同じ人が建てたものです。
Its inside is also very charming. There is a little church near Honaunau (west side of Island) named St. Benedict Painted Church. It is very famous for many sacred pictures drawn inside. Same architect built both.

カトリック教会なのでしょう。十字架にイエスの像があり、庭にマリア像が立っています。
It must be Roman Catholic Church, there is a figure of Jesus Christ on the Holy Cross and image of the Virgin Mary in the garden.

金環日食 Annular Solar Eclipse

 2012年5月21日の早朝、東京では173年ぶりの金環日食がみられるのでちょっとした騒ぎになりました。小学生は7時前に学校に集まって観察会を行っていました。当日の天気予報は曇り、雲間に見られるであろうとの予報でした。
On the early morning of the 21st of May we,in Tokyo, would be able to see an annular solar eclipse for the first time in 173 years so we were alive with the excitement. School children gathered at school at 7 am and held observation meeting. The weather forecast of that morning was cloudy but they said we would be able to see eclipse among the cloud.

 この雲が写真を撮るに幸いしました。フィルターなしでちょっと幻想的な写真を撮れました。この状態のときは、日食グラス(紙製のがなんと315円もしました)をかけるとなにも見えません。
Blessed with cloud I could take photos without filter. I think these are very fantastic. At that moment I could see nothing through the eclipse glasses because of cloud. This glasses were made of paper but these were 315yen,too expensive!

雲が厚いとこんな写真で、雲が薄くなると露出オーバーで写真になりませんでした。
It is the photo when I took it through thick could. Under thin cloud I took miserable photos because of overexposure.

 7時35分の金環食時点では、雲が切れフィルターを使いました。金環は撮れましたが、どこにでもある写真になってしまいました。
At 7:35 am, just the time of the annular eclipse cloud became thin so I used filter. I got a photo of gold ring but it was conventional photo.

金環になった時、手元に置いた寒暖計は5度下がり16℃、冷たい風が吹いてきました。公式の発表では、一度の低下ということでした。芝生の上だったので、保温効果がなくまともに下がったのかもしれません。
At that time my thermometer has fallen by 5 degrees and cold wind blew. The official announcement said 1 degree down at that time. I measured it on the lawn so there was nothing for keeping temperature. I think it is the reason why to fall temperature so big.

そして、太陽は戻ってきました。金環食になった時、周囲が暗くなったという印象はありませんでしたが、夕方になるといつも騒ぐカラスの群れが大騒ぎをしました。テープレコーダーを用意しておけばよかったと思いましたが、後の祭り。
And sun came back. At the moment of full eclipse I did not feel darkness but many crows that always made noise at the twilight around my house cried so loudly. I regretted not preparing a tape recorder but too late!

キャプテン・クック記念碑（2） Captain Cook Monument(2)

 去年、ケアラケクア湾の対岸からはるかキャプテン・クック記念碑を望みました。ここからはカヤックで行くしか方法はありません。今回はあの稜線を下るトレイルに挑戦してみました。
Last year I looked over the Captain Cook Monument from the  opposite shore of Kealakekua bay. From this point there was no way to go there except by kayak. This time I challenged to go there through the trail at the mountain ridge of this picture.

トレイルの入り口には、マンゴーがたわわになっていましたが、残念ながら、半月ほど早くてまだ熟していませんでした。トレイルは滑りやすいこんな道をひたすら下っていきます。約3.2k、高度差は600mです。歩きにくい道です。帰りののぼりが心配で仕方がありませんでした。途中で若者4人組に追い越されました。心配そうな顔で、水は持ってきたかと聞いてくれました。二人で3本持ってきたので大丈夫と答えました。
There were many mango at the trail head but these did not ripen. What a shame, it was a half month early. The trail was like this, very slippy, and simply went down 2 ml and 2000ft. It was very hard to walk so I worried about return. On the way young group of 2 couples passed me by. They asked me with an anxious look whether I brought plenty water or not. I said "don't worry we, two, have 3 bottle of water"

 一時間半かかってようやく到着。塔の白いペンキが少し剥げかかっていました。
We took 1.5 hour to arrive at the monument, white paint was peeking off in spots.

すごい絶壁に面したきれいな水の湾です。
This bay faced high lava cliff and water was extremely clear.

 絶好のシュノケール・ポイントなので、コナからの観光船で来たお客がシュノケールを楽しんでいました。
So it was a very good for snorkeling. Many people came from Kailua Koa by sightseeing ship enjoyed it.

 こちらは、対岸からカヤックで来た人たちです。
They came from opposite shore by Kayak.

途中で我々を追い越して行った人です。ここまでこれてよかったねと話しかけてくれました。また水はあるかと聞いてくれました。あと一本しか残ってなくて、昼飯の時は我慢して、帰りの登りに備えようと思っていました。そうしたら、なんと2本恵んでくれました。日陰のないのぼり道、水は命です。彼らは命を分けてくれました。とてもチャーミングな二人ですが、それ以上に天使のように見えました。
A couple, who went ahead of us, said "Well done to come here, do you have water enough?" At  that time we had only one bottle so we thought that we could not take water at the lunch because had to keep it for return, climbing rout. I said so, then they gave us 2 bottles. At the long climbing and no shade rout Water was a life. they shared us a life. They were not only very handsome and lovely but angels.

 なんとマングースが彼らの荷物を狙っています。大声を上げたのですが、お菓子の小袋をくわえて逃げていきました。
彼らにこのブログのアドレスを渡し、帰国したらこのハイキングについて書くから、読んでねと頼みました。もし読んでいたら、われわれの心からの感謝を受け取ってください。
What a surprise, Mongoose had its eye on their knapsack. I shouted to scare it, but  too late it ran away with a little bag of the candy in its mouth.

みんな楽しそうに泳いでいます。もし私が泳いだらたぶん帰れなくなるでしょう。
Every body enjoyed swimming. If I swam I could not go back.

さあ、帰りです。我々にとって上りは、二倍から下手すると三倍時間がかかります。はるか下のほうに馬でトレッキングしている人が見えました。まさか追いつかれないだろうと思ったのですが…
Now it's time to go back. We need double or triple hours to crimb the way back.
I saw people on the  horse far below. I had never thought that they would catch up on me.

半分来たところで追いつかれました。四本足があると強いですね！後で調べたら乗馬のツアーは一人100ドルでした。この時ほどうらやましいと思ったことはありません。もっとも1時間45分ほどでのぼれました。
ところで、別れるとき、彼らに日本のお菓子を車のサイドミラーにくくりつけておくからといいました。ところが、戻ってみたらおせんべい3枚と、ヨクモック2,3本しか持ってきていませんでした。気は心でおいては来ましたが、すべて飲み干した貴重な水のお礼にしては、ささやかすぎました。
もう一度、「ありがとう」といいます。
At the half way they caught up us, because horse has 4 legs. Later I knew Horse back tour is $100 for one person. I envied them very much. But we could go back only 1hour and 45minuts.
By the way when I said good-bye to that kind people I promised them I would leave Japanese sweet at their car's side mirror. But when I arrived my car I recognized I had only 3 rice cake(osenbei) and 2 or 3 shortbread.
I left them because it is the thought that counts, but too small for precious water, we drunk all of them. We say "Thank you" again!!

マウナ・ケア州立公園 Mauna Kea State Park

ハワイ島のほぼ中央部を横断するサドル・ロードを通ってカイルア・コナに向かいました。ヒロ側はかなりの雨でした。
こんなにいい道路ですが、レンタカーは通行禁止になっています。
I went to Kailua Kona though the Sadle Road (Rout 200), it passed almost center of the island. It is such a fine road but Rent-a-Car prohibited to drive. It was heavy rain at  Hilo side.

 この道の最高部（約2000m）の、マウナ・ケア山頂に向かう道路とマウナ・ロアに行く道路の交差点を過ぎると雲の上に出て、いい天気になります。この地点が分水嶺になっています。
When I passed the  peak of this road(about 7000ft high), I came to over the cloud so it was fine weather. It is just a intersection one is to Mauna Kea summit the other to Mauna Loa Observatory. It is kind of watershed.

マウナ・ケア州立公園には広場と点在するバンガローがあります。背景はマウナ・ケア、しかし頂上は見えない。
At the Mauna Kea State Park there is an open space and some bungalows. Background is Mauna Kea but we cannot see the summit from here.

 近くのスコリア丘までのハイキングコースがありましたので、挑戦しました。約1.6キロでコースも写真にある通りなだらかそうに見えました。よく考えてみれば、スコリア丘の傾斜は最低でも30度で決してなだらかではありません。
It has a trail to a cinder cone(scoria hill) near by. It was one mile and looked not so steep so I challenged to go. But think well slop of cinder cone is 30 degrees minimum so it is not gentle.

 分水嶺で雨を降らせてしまっていますので、こちらは乾燥地帯。大きなサボテンが花を咲かせていました。
It was dry area because cloud stopped at watershed. There was big cactus blooming charming flowers.

高度差200ｍをあがるのに1時間かかってしまいました。出発点の高度が2000ｍあるので、かなり息切れをして、休み休みになったためです。
正面にマウナ・ロアの雄大な姿が。火口はありませんでした。
I spent 1 hour to gain only 700ft, I had to rest many times because of luck of oxyen, elvation of trail head was 7000ft. I was able to see  a magnificent shape of Mauna Loa, but no vent at the top of the hill.

右側に、軍隊の訓練場があります。滑走路も見えかすかに土煙が上がっているのは、戦車が走っているからです。道路はサドル・ロード、これから走るところです。
At the right side there was a training camp of US army. It has a landing strip. Can you see a cloud of dust,Tanks running dust. The road was the Sadle Road which I would run after.

 左側は、ヒロ方面でケアのスコリア丘がたくさんあります。
Left side was Hilo direction. There were many cinder cones of Mauna Kea.

カイルア・コナに向かっています。広い牧場が黄色い花で覆われて見事です。
I was going to Kailua Kona. Wide ranch was covered with yellow flwers, it was splendid!

大地震と津波（11） tremendous earthquake and tidal wave(tsunami) (11)

 あの大地震で、震源から４００ｋmも離れた我が家の灯篭の頭が落ちたことを、この大地震と津波（1）で紹介しました。
In my blog I wrote that head of Stone lantern of my house fell down by that earthquake although my house was 400km far from epicenter.

 余震が続いたので、復旧は一年後に行いました。なんと４人ががりで持ち上げました。如何に復旧が大変かの例を身近に見せてくれました。（こんなことで大変などと言ったら被災地の人に怒られますが）
I mended it one year after because many aftershocks continued on this year.
It was necessary 4 workers to put it on the top. I realized it is very hard work to restore a damage. (Of course victims of the stricken area are very angry when I say it is hard work about such little thing.)

一年ぶりに元通りになった灯篭です。豊後梅の咲きかたを見ても、今年の冬が寒かったことがわかります。この日の夜にかなり強い余震があってヒヤッとしました。
The stone lantern recovered as it used to be after one year. The flowers of Bungo plum showed this winter colder than last year.
I shuddered from the strong aftershock of that night.

大地震と津波（10） tremendous earthquake and tidal wave(tsunami) (10)

「日本火山の会」のミーティング（ヴォルケーノ・カフェという名前です）で、裏磐梯にある磐梯噴火記念館の副館長さんの佐藤さんから、被災地を回った報告がありました。
Mr.Sato, deputy director of the Memorial Hall of Mt.Bandai Eruption at the back side of Mt. Bandai in Fukushima Pref.,reported his tour around the Tsunami stricken area in the meeting of "Japan Volcano lovers Club"(named Volcano Cafe)"

被災から８か月も経過していましたが、復旧はその努力にもかかわらず、まだまだという写真がたくさんありました。

These photos was taken 8 months after since then, but these showed us that they have not be recovered well in spite of many people's hard work.

津波がいかに高かったかを如実に物語っています。
これらを、保存しようという意見と、見るたびに思い出すから早く撤去してほしいとという意見があります。佐藤さんは保存したほうがいいという意見でした。私も同じです。しかし、直接被害にあって、肉親、友達、財産を失った人々にそれを主張する自信はありません。
あえて言えば、広島の原爆ドームが保存され、世界遺産になって原爆の恐ろしさを全世界に訴えているという意義が、繰り返し悲惨な思い出を新たにされる被爆者の辛さの上に成り立っていることを、想起しなければならないということなのでしょうか？
They shows us how high the Tsunami was.
There are two opinions about those. One is that these must be reserved for a reminder, the other is that those must be remove quickly because they recall serious memories.
Mr. Sato and I have former opinion, but we cannot insist this to the people who lost blood relatives, friends and property actually.
If I must say something, The Atomic Bomb Dome at Hiroshima was registered World Heritage and has be stressing the cruelty of nuclear weapon. It has a very big meaning. But we don't forget the sacrifice of A-bomb victims who remind severe memories every time when they saw this.

心臓の手術を受けられ、退院後わずか１週間にも関わらず、追悼式に出席され「子孫に語り伝えよう」とおっしゃった天皇陛下の言葉にもある重さを感じます。
His Majesty the Emperor said "We have to pass this story down from generation to generation" at the celemony held in one year memory of this Disaster. Majestly was operated on for heart and he attended this only 1 week after getting ouf of the hospital.

この残骸をどう処理するかは、大きな問題になっています。いくつかの市町村が、引き受けの名乗りを上げてくれました。
I is very big problem how to dispose such huge amount of bebris, some of them were exposed to radiation from the broken nuclear power plant. Some cities and towns accepted these.
新聞によると、２０万トンタンカー２０隻分のがれきが、今太平洋を漂っていて２０１６年にはハワイの海岸に流れ着くそうです。
そういえば、ハワイ島の最南端サウス・ポイントには、いつも大量のごみが流れ着いていました。北朝鮮のハングル語が書かれたものが多くみられ、あの辺で投棄されると、ここにつくということを実証しています。ただ、これらのごみとはスケールも違えば、住民のかけがえのないものが含まれているため「敬意をもって取り扱うように」と呼びかけてくれているそうです。
According to the newspaper, same amount of 20 supertankers of 200thousand tons debris are floating in Pacific Ocian now, and will be arrived at Hawaii at 2016.
When I went to the southern most place of Big-Island, South-Point, I saw big acmount of garbage on the beach.  Hungul alphabet of North Korea were written on many of them. It means if the things were thrwon arround there, they reach Hawaii.
Of cource, the debris of this time are much, much more. And they said treat them with respect beacause those are most precious for the victims.

大川小学校では、７４名の児童（全児童の７０％に当たります）と１０人の教職員が死亡、行方不明になりました。彼岸で子供たちを救うお地蔵様と此岸（この世）で子供たちを楽しませたドラえもんやサンタクロースの人形が涙を誘います。
At Ookawa Elememtary School 74 students (about 70% of all) and 10 teachers and staffs were dead or missing.
On this monument there are Ojizousama(a deity of children) who guards children in the next world and dolls of Doraemon and Santa Claus who pleased children in this world. Looking at this We cannot hold back tears.

大地震と津波（9） tremendous earthquake and tidal wave(tsunami) (9)

 私は最近、「日本火山の会」という主としてネットで情報交換をしている会に参加しました。（http://kazan-net.jp/) 　そこのネットワークを通じて、宮城県の塩釜市に住む谷口さんという方から次のようなメールが入ってきました。（写真は塩釜港１６時）
「先ほど、塩釜市、七が浜町、仙台市など五か所の海岸で、鎮魂のための花火が次々と打ち上げられるのを１１階の自宅のベランダから見ていました」
Recently I joined a "Volcano Lover's Club" (http://Kazan-net.jp/ Japanese only but many beautiful photos in it.) which  mainly exchanges information about volcano through Internet.
We received a mail from Mr.Taniguchi who is a member of this club and is living at Shiogama city, Miyagi Prefecture.
"A short while ago I saw fire works for requiem of victims of tsunami launching from the 5 beaches such as Shiogama-city, Shichigahama-town and Sendai-city. I saw them from the veranda of my house of 11th floor."

「昨年の今頃は、津波による車や建物などの残骸が残る暗闇の中に、仙台港の石油精製基地が爆音を立てながら赤々と燃え上っているのを思い出しました。」
"At this time last year I was seeing the fire with explosions of the oil refinery factory at Sendai Port in the darkness and there were so many wrecks of buildings and cars around my house."

「また自宅近くにあるJRの駅の広場には、津波で流されてきた車が暗闇の中でライトを点灯したまま警笛を鳴らし続け、その音が今でも耳から離れません」

"At a square in front of a station there was a car carried by tsunami lighting the lamps and blowing horn all the time in pitch-dark of blackout.I cannot forget that sight and sound."

「なり続ける車の警笛」、瀕死の車の悲鳴とも多くの犠牲者への弔いのサイレントも聞こえるような、、、何とも言えなく悲しい状況を一言で描写されているように感じ、このブログへの転載をお願いしたところ、快諾していただき、写真も送ってくださいました(この写真はすべて谷口さんからのものです）
"Continuing horn sound "  As if it was a scream from the dying car or a siren of condolence for victims. I felt this sentence express such miserable situation in one word, so I asked Mr. Taniguchi to use his sentence on my blog. He accepted and sent these photos.
一年を迎える３月に入って、私のブログの津波の記事に対するアクセスが世界各地から急増しました。そこで、もう少し津波の記事を書こうと思っています。
This March, the first anniversary of the Earthquake, the accesses to my blog about Tsunami were a rapid increase from many countries of the world. So I am thinking to write about Tsunami more.
