ラナイ島（5）神々の庭園 Lanai Island (5) Garden of the Gods



 午後からは、こんな店でお弁当を仕入れて。今度は北に向かいました。

I bought lunch box such a shop and went to northward.

やがて、アイロン・ウッド（鉄樹=カバノキの一種だそうな）の乾燥樹林（ドライウッドズを直訳）の中を走ります。日本では見るこのない。とてもいい雰囲気の場所です。
It was not long before I drove through the woods of Iron wood( it is called dry woods). I have never seen such a woods in Japan, it was very nice atmosphere.





　　　　　　

 

 



道はどんどん険しくなります。
Road became more and more steep.

ここから、周囲は真っ赤な土壌になります。たぶん多量の鉄分を含んで

　るのでしょう。正面はモロカイ島です。

From there it was red soil around. These may contain much Iron. The front is Molokai Isl.

 

 

　　　　　　　　



ここが、終点、ウミガメやアザラシの産卵地です。ゴールデン・サンド・ビーチと呼ばれ、金色（黄色?）の砂浜です。人っ子一人いなく、強い砂風で肌が削り取られるようです。ここで食べた昼食のおいしかったこと？？？
It was the end of this road, called Gold (yellow?) sand beach, sea turtles and seals lay eggs here. No one is there and strong sand wind shaved skin.I ate Lunch box here in strong sandy wind, so it was delicious indeed???
　　

ようやく帰ってきて、ラナイーシティが見えた時はほっとしました。帰りの時間は、行の半分です。なぜだと思いますか。行は下りで、そろそろ走りますが、帰りの登りはふかしこんで一気に登ってきたためです。（空の様子を比べてください。ここはいつも雲がかかっています。）
Coming back and when I saw Lanai City again, I felt quite relieved. I need only half time to go back to compare with going. Do you know why? I went to downward carefully but went up with vigor.( See the sky it was always cloudy here)

 

 



ラナイ島（4）難破船の浜 Lanai Island (4) Shipwreck Beach

 ラナイ島の舗装道路は40Ｋｍしかなく、それ以外のところは4輪駆動の車しか入れません。そこで、ジープを借りました。
Only 30 miles of Lanai's road are paved, so for going around Isl. we have to drive 4WD car. Then I borrowed Jeep.

 ジープの運転は初めてです。チェンジレバーのわきにあるもう一つのレバーが、四輪駆動に切り替えるためのもので、走行中でも切り替わります。これはもう一段、より駆動力が必要な時に切り替えるポジションがあって、これは止まってからでないと切り替わりません。それ以外は、普通の車と同じ。
It was my first experience to drive Jeep.
Another lever beside the shift lever is the change lever for 2WD to 4WD, it can shift when we are running. But it has one more position to get more power. It is necessary to stop then shift to that position.
Except for this it is same with common car.

 ラナイシティから北東に下っていくと、難破船が見えます。対岸はモロカイ島です。
Went down to north-west from Lanai-City, we saw wrecked ship. The opposite shore was Molokai Isl.

 この船、どうしても取り除けないので、シップレック・ビーチ（難破船の浜）とうゆう観光スポットにしてしまいました。といってもほとんど人は来ませんが。
ジープといえども走れるのはここまで。
They could not remove this so they named  this beach "Shipwreck Beach".
It has become a one of the sightseeing spot of Lanai. Even a Jeep could not go beyond this point.

 ヤシの実が流れよった、浜から見た光景です。
It is the sight from the beach with coconuts. "One coconut came from unknown island far off"(it is the libretto of famous Japanese children's song. When we see coconut on the beach we feel some kind of nostalgia)

We approached on foot through such rocky beach

 

不気味な幽霊船です。この船は、第二次世界大戦のときの輸送船（リバティーシップといわれています。）で、コンクリート？の船という英文の解説がありましたが、日本語のガイドブックには、赤さびた船という形容になっています。
It was a weird ghost ship. This was a transport ship of World War Ⅱ (called Liberty Ship). According to the English guide book it was made of concrete,　but Japanese book expressed it as "rusty ship"

 浜には古代人の白骨がと思いましたが、どうやら山羊か何かのようです。
We found breached bones. At first I thought it was a skeleton of ancient Hawaiian, but actually it was bones of goat or something.

 この近辺の道は、こんな状況で、それほど凸凹はしていませんが、砂が柔らかくて、所々で砂から脱出するために木を敷き詰めた痕跡がありました。レンタカーショップには、砂に埋まったジープの写真が何枚も貼ってあって、注意を呼びかけていました。まったく人が住んでいないので、動かなくなったら、歩いて救援を頼まなければならず、かなりの費用がかかるとのことでした。
The road around there were such condition, not so bump but sand was very soft. In places the branches were spread on the road for getting out the car from soft sand.
As warning many pictures of car getting stuck in the sand posted on the wall of lent-a-car shop.
No resident lived around there so we have to go back to the city on foot to ask help and need big money to pull out the car.

 度重なる火砕流や降灰が作った断層の露頭です。関東ローム層よりももっと赤い色でした。（クリックすると拡大しますので火山マニアの方は観察してみてください）
So many pyroclastic flows and volcanic ashed made this exposed fault. This was more red compared with the Loam layer of the Kanto District.(click this for enlarging and observe it if you are crazy about volcano)

ラナイ島（3） フォーシーズン コエレ ロッジ Lanai Isl (3) Forseasons Lodge at Koele

フォーシーズンズのロッジ・アット・コエレは、ハワイ州の最も大きな木造建物で、ホテルとして全米Ｎｏ．1のランキングをとったことがあるそうです。
Lodge at Koele of Forseasons Resort is the largest  wooden building in State of Hawaii and got number one hotel ranking in the United States.

 部屋はものすごく広いというわけではありませんが、ゆったりとして落ち着いた雰囲気です。
Room is not an extraordinarily big but it has calm and relax atmosphere.

ロビーから部屋に行く通路も開放感があり、高原の雰囲気を楽しむといった感じです。
A passage to the guest rooms is kind of open air so we can enjoy highland breeze.

ウェルカム・ドリンクを飲みに行くと、ベランダの椅子に、大きな顔をして猫がくつろいでいました。高級ホテルと猫、あまりない取り合わせです。
When we were enjoying welcome drink, cat sat on the chair and relax beside us. It is very strange combination, cat and luxury hotel.

 大切にされているのか、まったく人怖じをしません。
Because she is always made much of, she was no guard against the people.

レストランの雰囲気です。日本のガイドブックには、上着着用で、持っていなければフロントで貸してくれるとのことでした。実際はこんな感じで、女性はともかく、男性は半ズボンの人も多かったです。英語のガイドブックでは、ドレス・コードはリゾート・カジュアルとなっていました。
It is a main dinning room. Japanese guide book says people have to take jacket in this restaurant if you have not they rent it.　But actually is like this.
Many men wore shorts. According to English guide book the dress cord is "Resort Casual"

ギターの演奏があり、両側にある大きな暖炉には火が入っていました。
Guitar was performed and fire were burning in the big fireplaces of both side of dinning room.

 上から見た写真です。味はまづまづ、値段は、日本の一流ホテルから比べれば、半値といった感じです。
Picture from upstairs. Tastes of this restaurant was not bad and price was half compared with Japanese first class hotel restaurant.

広い図書室があり、それほど本は多くありませんが、豪華な絵画全集などがありました。
私は、ハワイ内で動き回るとき、ホテルライフを楽しむわけではないのでとにかく安いホテルを選んできました。ここにきて家内に苦情を言われ、今回は高級ホテルを選んだわけです。一泊一部屋390ドルでした。（二人分で、為替が80円以下でしたので・・・・）
There was a wide library. It had not many books but luxury books of paintings.
I had chosen the cheap hotels when I traveled around the Hawaii, because I did not stay for enjoying hotel life. But my wife alway complained this, so this time I chose deluxe hotels.
 It is $390 for one night. (at this time Yen is very strong to daller, $1=78yen)

ラナイ島（2） ラナイシティ Lanai Island (2) Lanai City

 マネレ・ベイから15ｋｍほど内陸に入ったところに、ラナイ島唯一の町ラナイ・シティがあります。これはそのメイン・ストリート。標高490ｍ、島の人口の９割が住んでいます。といっても、全体が3,000人なので、とても静かな町です。信号もネオンサインもないとのことです。
この日泊まる予定のフォーシーズンズのロッジ　アット　コエレはこの町はずれにあります。
The only town of  Lanai Isl. is Lanai City, it is about 10mils north from the Manele Bay. This is main street of this town, 1700ft high from sea level and 90% people, but just 2700 people, are living in this town. It is very quiet, no signal and neon light.
Foreseasons resort, Lodge at Koele, I intended to stay that night, is on the outskirts of this town.

 かって、ジム・ドールがパイナップル・プランテーションとして開発した島だけに、町の中心部にドール公園があります。
This Island was developed by James Dole as Pineapple Plantation and he created  Dole Park in the center of this town.

公園といっても、大きな広場で、その周りに町の主要な建物やマーケット、食堂、お土産物屋などがあります。
Even called park it is just a open space and town buildings, super markets, restaurants and souvenir shops around it.

ラナイ島のシンボルが、３０ｍ以上すくっと立ちあがている、ノーフォーク松です。
これは、牧場経営に雇われたジョージ・マンローが乾燥したラナイ島に湿気を捕まえるため、この背の高い樹を大量に植えさせたといわれています。それが奏功してか、シティの周辺は雨も多く、樹木が豊富です。
These are cook pines(Norfolk pine), symbol trees of Lanai Isl. These are standing up straight over 100ft.
George Munro, hired ranch manger, made workmen to plant cook  pines to catch moisture at dry island from the passing cloud. It was effectual, Lanai city has much rain and many trees around the town.

ラナイ島（1） Lanai Island (1)

マウイ島ラハイナから、ラナイ島マレネ・ベイに向かうフェリです。
ラナイ島は、ハワイ諸島の中では6番目の大きさの島です。
長さ30Ｋｍ，幅21Ｋｍ　人口3,000人　フォーシーズンの超豪華な（五つ星クラス）の二つのホテルの他は何もないといわれる島です。
This is a ferryboat from Lahaina, Maui, to Manele Bay, Lanai.
Lanai Isl. is 6th largest Island in Hawaii Islands.
18 miles long and 13miles wide. Resident population is 3000.
People say that there is nothing in Lanai except two super gorgeous hotels of Four Seasons Resort(5 stars grade).

 港から出航すると、豪華客船が止まっているのが見えました。オーストラリアからサンフランシスコ経由で来ています。
Soon after leave the port we can see a luxury liner from Australia via San Francisco.

背景に見えるのは、カホオラウェ島。ハワイ主要８島の中ではもっとも小さい島で、かって海軍の演習場に使われ、いまだ不発弾が残っているため立ち入り禁止の島です。
Background is Kahoolawe Isl. smallest isl in major 8 Hawaii Islands.
It was the maneuvers place of US Navy and remains many unexploded shells so the general public can not land at.

 浸食されて険しい谷を造っている西マウイの右側の雲間から、ハレアカラ（3,000ｍ）がかすかに見えています。
West Maui has steep eroded valleys. On the right side We can see Haleakala Mt. (10,023ft) dimly.

 ラナイ島が近づいてきました。最も高いところは、ラナイ・ハレ約1,000mで、しょっちゅう雲がかかっています。
This is Lanai, highest  point is Lanai Hale, 3370ft, always has cloud over the top.

 人の気配は全くありません。
There is no sign of people living.

 浸食でできた高い崖。この島には海蝕の崖としては太平洋で二番目に高い崖があります。
High eroded Cliff. This island has the second  highest sea cliff in the Pacific Ocean.

40分ぐらいたって、ようやく建物が見えてきました。フォーシーズンのマレネ・ベイ・ホテルです。
After 40minutes, at last we can see the buildings. These are Manele Bay Hotel of Four Seasons Resort.

ハワイ火山コイン Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter

 2010年に25セント硬貨の新しいデザインとして、56の国立公園のものを作ることが決められ、この度ハワイ火山国立公園のものが発行されました。キラウエアのプウ・オオ火口から溶岩流や噴石が飛び散る様子まで刻まれた精巧なものです。
拡大すると読める　Ｅ　Ｐｌｕｒｉｂｕｓ　Ｕｎｕｍ　は1955年までの公式標語「多数から一つへ」、現在は　Ｉｎ　Ｇｏｄ　Ｗｅ　Ｔｒｕｓｔ　「我々は神を信じる」で、表面にはこの文言が刻まれています。
The law to mint 56 US National Parks Quarter was enforced in 2010.　This time Hawaiian Volcanoes Quarter was issued. It is very elaborate one that carves incandescent rubbles and Lava flow from Pu'u O'o crater.
( If you crick this photo you can read Latin words " E Pluribus Unum", official motto of US until 1955, means "out of many, one"  Now is "In God We Trust"  Both Mottoes are carved both side of this coin.....of course I don't write this sentence for American readers...)
　　　　　　　　　　　
 キーホルダーにするアタッチメントが、ヒロではどうしても見つからず、東急ハンズで、写真を入れてキーホルダーを作るハメパチがどうやら合うので、いいキーホルダーができました。（厚みがあるのでぱちんとは蓋がはまらず、接着剤で蓋をとめました）
I could not get an attachment to make key chain of this coin in Hilo, but I got it in Tokyo. It is for making key chain by inserting photos, named Hamepachi( means the lid shut with a click) key holder. Coin is too thick to shut the lid with click so I fixed the lid with glue.

アメリカでは、50州のシンボルをデザインした、25セント（クォーター）が発行し終わって、自治領のものそして国立公園と続くようです。やっと50州全部そろえてやれやれと思っていたのですが・・・・
The series of 50 States Quarter finished. I collected all of them with great difficulty but new series start!!!

50州シリーズの最後が、ハワイで、カメハメハ大王がデザインされ、「治世は、正義によって永遠に続く」というハワイ語が刻まれています。
The last coin of 50 States series is Hawaii. Kamehameha the Great is designed with Hawaiian words "Ke Sa Oka Aina I Kapono" means " With Justice, a reign continues forever". ( I'm not sure of this translation)

マウイ島ラハイナ港 Lahaina Harrbor Maui Isl

 ラナイ島に行くため、ハワイ島ヒロから飛行機でマウイ島のカフルイ空港に行き、シャトルでラハイナ港に行き、そこからフェリでラナイ島にわたりました。
ラハイナはとても賑やかな町です。道の両側には観光客目当てのしゃれた店がいっぱいあります。
カアナパリまで走っているさとうきび列車の始発駅もあります。（ラベルー町ーさとうきび列車参照）
To visit to Lanai Island from Hilo, Big Island, at first I went to Kafului Air-port of Maui Island by plane and went to Lahaina Harbor by shuttle limousine then went to Lanai by ferry.
Lahaina is a very lively town. Both side of street there are many stylish shops for tourists.
There is a station of origin of Sugar Cane train to Kaanapali.(see Sugar Cane train, Ravel-Town-)

 町の中心にある全米一番のバニヤン・ツリーはなんと800坪の木陰を作って人々に憩いを与えています。マウイ島の日差しは強烈なので、その下に来るとホッとします。
It is the biggest banyan tree in USA, making the shade of 0.7 acre. Under the strong sun shine of Maui Isl, it gives us kind of Oasis.

 シャトルバスの女性運転手に頼んで、町はずれの浄土院まで乗せてもらいました。歩くと２０分以上かかるので、ほとんど観光客が行きません。私も初めてです。３重塔とヤシと真っ青な空という不思議な取り合わせ。
I asked lady driver of shuttle Limousin to carry us to the Jodou Mission just off the town. It takes 20minutes on foot so few tourist visit there. I also the first time to visit.
It is strange combination, a three-stories pagoda, palm trees and blue sky.

 そしてここには、国外では最大といわれる青銅の大仏さまが鎮座されています。
The bronze great Buddha is enshrined here. It is the biggest bronze statue in foreign countries.

阿弥陀仏で、高さ3.6ｍ、重さ3トン。とてもいいお顔です。
It is 12 feet high and 3t weight Amitabha Buddha with noble face.

ハワイ移民100周年を記念して建てられたものだそうですが、縁起を読んで驚きました。施主が、かって私が持っていたゴルフ場、平塚富士見カントリークラブの社長大森正男さんだったのです。このゴルフ場はいったん破綻しました。
It was erected to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Japanese immigration to the Hawaii Islands. The Donor was Masao Omori, President of the Hiratsuka Fujimi Country Club. What an accident! I once belonged this Golf Club. This Club was collapse and rebuilt. 

お寺からすぐ海岸に出られラナイ島がよく見えます。休火山で標高1000ｍのラナイ・ハレの上空はたいてい雲があるそうです。
見物していると男性が木陰に椅子を出してすすめてくれました。ちょっとした食堂みたいなので、コーラを頼んだら、なんとそこのお寺の住職さんで、それでも冷たいコーラを持ってきてくれました。恐縮！！そっとお賽銭箱にお賽銭として入れてきました。
Back yard of this temple is beautiful beach and good place to see Lanai Isl.
Almost every time there are clouds over the top of Mt. Lanai-Hale, dormant volcano, 3300ft hgt.
When I was looking around, a man set the chairs in the shade and suggested to sit there. It looked like some kind of dinning  hall so I asked him Coke. But he is chief priest of this temple, he gave me Coke out of kindness. Later I throw some money into an offertory box.

お寺の横にある墓地。何となく胸痛くなる光景でした。
